After breaking through the skull, the Headcrab proceeds to take over its host's motor functions through some unknown biological process, keeping its host alive but helpless through the entire process. Origin: A portal opened by the Resonance cascade, been stranded on earth ever since The Resonance Cascade was a catastrophically destructive event. Aside from randomly teleporting alien wildlife from Xen into Black Mesa and beyond, it also caused severe damage to various power and communications systems throughout the facility. Gordon Freeman is forced to fight his way to the surface to call for help as the phone lines had been cut throughout the complex, indicating that a Resonance Cascade event causes severe electromagnetic disturbances similar to an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP). Given that the facility begins rapidly falling apart in the immediate aftermath, it can also be surmised that the Cascade generated some kind of shockwave and/or aftershocks similar to an earthquake, severe enough to cause structural failures throughout the underground laboratory. While appearing to have been a contained event, it did have repercussions across the entire planet. The Resonance Cascade was the cause of not only the initial inter-dimensional rift but also all following events, such as the Portal Storms which spread across the Earth and ultimately led to the Seven Hour War and the Combine's invasion of the planet. The Resonance Cascade is, therefore, arguably the single most significant event in the entire Half-Life timeline and universe. Every event across the Half-Life series can be traced back to the Resonance Cascade as the point of origin. Though the Resonance Cascade destroyed the Anti-Mass Spectrometer, the phenomenon was no longer restricted to ground zero and was self-sustaining, meaning it would continue to hold the rift open until action was taken to close it. As Freeman was responsible for carrying out the experiment, he took upon himself the job of closing it, This included launching a satellite-based portal array network from a missile silo on the base, using something called a 'Xenium Resonator' from orbit to force the rift to close. The remaining scientists from the Lambda Core discovered that, despite their efforts, the portal was being deliberately held open from the other side by a supremely powerful entity: the Nihilanth. Freeman then equipped himself for an expedition to the borderworld itself on a mission to destroy the Nihilanth and force the rift to close for good. Though Freeman succeeded in slaying the Nihilanth in Xen, the mission was a total failure. Instead of closing the rift, the death of the Nihilanth seemingly only worsened it, and anomalous meteorological events known as Portal Storms began raging across Earth, depositing hostile alien creatures from Xen and wreaking havoc on human society. This eventually attracted the attention of the Combine, who exploited the fracture created at Black Mesa to launch a massive, planet-wide invasion, leading to the apocalyptic Seven Hour War and the subjugation of Earth
