Predatory, almost lazy. “You’re reckless tonight,” Sephiroth says mildly. Zack snorts. “You say that like it’s new.” A flicker—amusement, maybe—crosses Sephiroth’s eyes. “You were slower at the end,” he continues, voice calm, deliberate. “Overconfident.” Zack bristles immediately. “I had it handled.” “Did you?” That’s all it takes. Zack lunges—not with his sword, just momentum, hands grabbing, shoving Sephiroth back a step. Sephiroth lets it happen. Lets himself be moved, tested, coat brushing the wall before he pivots smoothly and redirects Zack’s weight. They collide again, harder this time. It’s not a clean fight. It’s hands on shoulders, fingers catching fabric, feet tangling as they hit the floor in a controlled sprawl that’s anything but calm. He bucks, rolls them, sheer stubborn strength and refusal carrying him through. They hit the floor again, Zack above him now, hands braced on either side of Sephiroth’s shoulders, chest heaving. For half a second, they just stare at each other. Then Sephiroth smiles. It’s small. Sharp. Provoking. Zack growls something incoherent and leans in—what’s meant to be another taunt turns into a kiss instead, rough and unplanned, teeth clashing just a little. Sephiroth freezes for a heartbeat… then responds, fingers fisting in Zack’s shirt and dragging him closer. The kiss doesn’t soften. It escalates. They break apart only because Sephiroth uses the opening to flip them again, rolling Zack onto his back with fluid precision. Zack laughs, breathless, eyes bright. “Oh, come on—don’t tell me you’re done already.” Sephiroth leans over him, one hand planted beside Zack’s head, the other resting just lightly at his throat—not pressing, just there. “You’re persistent,” Sephiroth says quietly. “I was curious if that was all bravado.” Zack’s grin shifts—less cocky now. More determined. “No,” he says, steady despite the heat still rushing through him. “It’s not.” He surges up again, catching Sephiroth off guard this time, momentum and refusal and raw will all at once. They roll, breathless, tangled, trading ground inch by inch—neither yielding, neither fully winning. When they pause again, it’s Zack who leans in this time, slower now, deliberate. “Guess you’ll have to keep testing me,” he murmurs. Sephiroth exhales softly, eyes dark, something unreadable flickering beneath the surface. They’re still tangled when it happens. Zack shifts, trying to leverage his weight again, teeth flashing in a grin that’s half challenge, half pure adrenaline. Sephiroth anticipates another shove—another attempt to roll him— —but instead, Zack dips in suddenly, sharp and impulsive, teeth catching skin at the line of Sephiroth’s shoulder where loose fabric has slipped aside. Not hard. Not gentle either. Just enough. Sephiroth stiffens instantly. It’s subtle—anyone else might miss it—but Zack feels it: the split-second hitch in his body, the breath that goes just a fraction too shallow. And then— A sound. Low. Unintended. Barely there. Not a gasp. Not a grunt. Something softer. Broken. A restrained, involuntary moan, cut off almost as soon as it escapes. The room goes very, very still. Zack freezes like he’s just struck lightning. “…Did you—” he starts, then stops, eyes blown wide, grin gone feral in an instant. Sephiroth’s eyes are darker now. Sharp. Focused. His composure snaps back into place with visible effort, jaw tightening as if he could physically will the sound back into himself. “That,” he says coolly, “…was unnecessary.” Zack lets out a shaky laugh, breath coming faster now, something wild flickering behind his eyes. “Oh. Oh, no,” he says, leaning in again, voice low and thrilled. “I think it was very necessary.” Sephiroth’s fingers curl in the fabric at Zack’s side—not pushing him away. Not pulling him closer. A warning. Or an invitation. Hard to tell. “Careful,” Sephiroth murmurs. “You’re testing more than you realize.” Zack’s smile is all teeth now, determination burning hot and bright. “Yeah?” he replies. “Good.”
