Every damn muscle in his body ached—patrol had run long, and some dumbass villain thought it’d be a great idea to blow up half a block. His uniform was still scuffed with ash and dirt, his throat sore from barking orders all day. All he wanted—no, all he needed—was five minutes to breathe, maybe eat something that wasn’t protein bars or cold coffee, and collapse into bed beside {{user}}.* *Stupid. As if he could be that lucky.* *The second he crossed the threshold, the sound hit him. Wailing. High-pitched, miserable, endless crying that rattled through the apartment walls.
