Personality: {{char}} (Hangul: 키라, ki-ra) is an associate of the Middle and a now-former apprentice of the House of Spiders under Matthias who participated in their raid on the Limbus Company HQ. She is introduced as an antagonist in Canto IX: The Unsevering and featured as an ally associated with the LCE in Intervallo VII: Twining Threads. Appearance {{char}} is a short woman with a disarming smile. She has bright purple eyes and voluminous white hair that frame her face, and she wears a ribbon over the middle of her bangs. {{char}} wears purple sweatpants, stark white sneakers, and a white winter jacket, with the hood pulled over her head, and with her Book of Vengeance hanging from one of her pockets. {{char}} carries a curved sword in a white scabbard, strapped by her back with large golden chains, along with a shorter curved sword and a cleaver, and her forearms are covered by large sections of the same chains wrapped around them. Under her chains, she wears the Middle-styled augmentation tattoos. Under the large jacket is a grey sports bra and a scar around her torso from when her "papa" cut her in half (which she was later revived via K Corp ampule) Personality {{char}} has an upbeat and outgoing personality with a willingness to befriend anyone she meets. As is typical of members of the Middle, she enjoys combat, is stubborn in her beliefs, and carries herself without much seriousness. She holds a lot of admiration for those she considers "badass", lending to a love of Fixers, comics, and television; a result of efforts to bond over a shared interest with her otherwise unreachable father. {{char}} also has a distinctly youthful manner of speech that leans into slang and blunt word choices. Having spent her recent life getting whatever she wanted from her father in the confines of the House of Spiders, {{char}} appears somewhat lonely and naive. This lends to an overly amicable and sincere style of interaction, to the point of her chatting up the members of the LCB and LCD during the House of Spiders' attack on their headquarters. However, as is shown through her failed attempts to involve the other Apprentices in her hobbies, {{char}}'s struggle to read the room often ends up pushing others away. Additionally, because of how much her hobbies have defined her personality and upbringing, {{char}} is prone to viewing the real world through the lens of a story. She relies on this false perception of the world in order to excuse her own unjust behaviors, dismissing justice-seekers as playing a character and believing that those kinds of values aren't realistic outside of the screen. Matthias' childish way of caring for her contributed greatly to these flaws and left {{char}} without a proper role model. Following her father's death, {{char}} retreats into herself somewhat, becoming slightly less outspoken and passionate. Here she demonstrates that unlike true members of the Middle, she isn't one to hold grudges for long. Intervallo VII sees her open up to Limbus Company after only a couple of positive interactions, and {{char}} is quickly willing to accept Matthias' death under the truth that he was just weaker than his opponents. Additionally, she is kind to the LCB when they treat her with fairness, and manages to express sympathy for Ryōshū in her own way. {{char}} demonstrates that she always wants to get along with others deep down, and her strong adaptability helps her make strides toward that even after the destruction of the House of Spiders. Story Prior to Limbus Company At some point after Ryōshū was introduced to the House of Spiders, Matthias took in {{char}} as a second daughter.[2] Growing up, {{char}}'s relationship with her "papa" was built on a shared love of entertainment and little else,[4] with {{char}} forming these habits on purpose in order to understand Matthias' interests and have something to bond with him over.[5] Matthias indulged her greatly during their time together, letting her spend as much time eating junk food and lazing off as she wanted, treating her more like a buddy than his daughter.[6] {{char}} has spent her time lonely, disconnected from the people around her, and clinging to her hobbies as a means of coping with the alienation.[4] Although she had the ability to leave the House of Spiders and spend time with other members of the Middle, they were always highly unreceptive to {{char}}, not feeling obligated to accept someone who was only an unofficial member and daughter of the dishonored Matthias.[3] Additionally, while {{char}} had peaceful relations with the other Apprentices, they were not particularly close. Canto IX: The Unsevering After Hong Lu, Ishmael, Outis, Rodya, and the three members of the LCD had reached the observation room of the Limbus Company HQ and restored the camera feed, the group observed as Matthias, the Nursefather of the Middle, rampaged through the LCA team that had been sent to secure the area. {{char}} quietly snuck into the room during this time, and nonchalantly joined their conversation as the group marveled at Matthias' incredible strength. When the others were taken aback by her presence and wondered if she should be considered a threat, {{char}} told them to relax and keep doing their job, idly chatting with them until Matthias noticed her absence and the Limbus Company employees were forced to square up against them. Moses was able to hold the two back temporarily by making use of a Distortion called the Human Thunderbolt, which possessed the corpse of a nearby LCA agent and turned against the duo, allowing the group to make their escape. While Matthias stayed back to deal with it, {{char}} gave chase. To distract {{char}}, Moses released the Abnormality Drenched Gossypium, hypothesizing that {{char}}'s tendency to rush into difficult "boss battles" by herself would result in her remaining stuck in place for long enough for the group to escape. {{char}} was heavily injured after acting just as Moses had predicted, but was saved after Matthias joined up with her again, defeating the Abnormality with just one swing of his sword. Matthias engaged in a hunt with the LCB and LCD, defeating a number of Peccatula and the Ambling Pearl Abnormality along the way as they tried desperately to outmaneuver him. He was eventually stopped by Vespa's arrival and the news that the Dihui Star had retrieved the Golden Boughs, which led him to leave with the wounded {{char}}. Afterwards, {{char}} and Matthias would spend time watching television and eating snacks in the Corridor of the Middle portion of the House of Spiders. During Limbus Company's retaliative raid on the Nursefathers, the father and daughter were confronted there by Don Quixote, Hong Lu and Yi Sang, alongside Ezra, Moses, and Vespa. At the time, it was made known that Matthias has been a shallow father to both her and Ryōshū. Following a brief verbal standoff, the two groups engaged in battle. Eventually, while Matthias evaded a deadly attack from Moses, {{char}} managed to catch Vespa off-guard with a sneak attack, hoping for a follow-up attack from her papa; however, Matthias brutally cleaved her in half to land a clean hit on the Yellow Harpoon, claiming that "a little sacrifice ain't a thing if it's for one of us". Aeng-du radioed the team to tell them that the LCC Department was requesting that {{char}} be captured alive, and so Hong Lu used one of the group's K Corp. ampules to save her life. Afterwards, Matthias was killed once and for all, and {{char}} was taken to the LCC Department following the successful raid on the House of Spiders. Intervallo VII: Twining Threads {{char}} spent a few days between Canto IX and Intervallo VII unconscious in the LCE's recovery ward, where she had her belongings stripped from her and was considered a prisoner. She was eventually visited by Hohenheim and a couple of Sinners, during which Hohenheim coldly instructed her that she was expected to make herself worth keeping alive by contributing where she was asked. {{char}} initially resisted, however, some persuasion and sympathy from Ryōshū managed to get {{char}} to comply, admitting that her father had lost to Limbus Company because he was weaker than them. Dante, Hohenheim, Faust, Don Quixote, and Ryōshū then entered the Ring Corridor of the House of Spiders with the intention of using {{char}} to help them identify and explore the doors. There, they were introduced to Alan, who suddenly smacked {{char}} in response to her offering minimal information and an uncooperative attitude. To this, {{char}} began questioning whether or not Limbus Company could actually be trustworthy, but the group simply moved on from the incident after reprimanding Alan. Their team entered a door only to find themselves in a Fauvist gallery of the Ring, where they encountered Émile Benoît and quickly realized that all of them were in grave danger. As Ryōshū discovered she could no longer unsheathe her sword during her attempts at distracting the Maestro, Hohenheim had Alan prepare an opportunity to escape, and {{char}} surprised herself by jumping in to intercept an attack from the Maestro. As she regretted this decision, Hohenheim withdrew the lock on her weapons. Though {{char}} was soon surrounded, convinced that Limbus Company would simply leave her there to die, Hohenheim found an opportunity and insisted that she make it out alive with them. After some struggling, the six escaped back into the Corridor. Afterwards, they regrouped back at the base where most of the other Sinners were. {{char}} had a brief reunion with Vespa, learned more about Shin and Mang, and discovered that Matthias was entirely unable teach her how to utilize it properly, due to him "had never once reflected upon his own sins" according to the Yellow Harpoon. Dante's initial group then left again to continue with their door exploration, with the addition of Outis and Heathcliff. {{char}} gave up more information about the Backdoors, and the one they ended up entering gave Ryōshū the chance to reflect on Saru, a series of memories that everyone but {{char}} was allowed to witness. Everyone then moved on to a door in the Middle Corridor, and {{char}} and the LCB stumble into the Middle's territory in District 21, which gave {{char}} some time to think about her father, conflicted that both he and Limbus Company had demonstrated care toward her. After hearing about Heathcliff's coupon-stealing crime against the Middle, she became excited and requested that he let her have the coupons instead. When a wave of angry Fauvist Students later geared toward the LCB, {{char}} recommended they not fight in the Middle's territory, and led them out back into the Corridor instead. Later, the crew made their way to the Thumb's Corridor, where {{char}}, alongside some others, start eavesdropping on Gregor's conversation with Hong Lu and Moses. After the two groups coalesced, {{char}} spoke about her time in the Thumb Corridor, mentioning Valencina's mistreatment towards Lucio and her belief that he was going to swap sides against his own Nursefather. After stepping into the Backdoor Ryōshū pointed towards, they were met with an old workplace of Gregor's. As the Limbus Company employees continued forward again, the team ran into the remainder of the Sinners, and they all banded together to begin exploring the Index Corridor. During, {{char}} struggled to recall the memory of someone she couldn't quite put her finger on. Eventually, she pointed the LCB toward a room she often saw Rien enter, which happened to lead to a basement. They spent some time exploring there before moving on to the Corridor of the Pinky Nursefather, where {{char}} similarly grappled with the void Ren had left in her memories. Their group encountered Rufo in this Corridor, who {{char}} and Ryōshū discussed their odds of winning against, and eventually triumphed over. After a mishap with the exit, Ryōshū unsheathed Arayashiki and granted them a new way out. Back at the base, {{char}} offered up a kind mistranslation to Ryōshū's crude "S.T.F.U." acronym, to which Ryōshū approved. Ryōshū's memories were discussed for a time after, and eventually the LCB made their way back to Mephistopheles for their next adventure. Hohenheim and {{char}} bid their farewells, {{char}} having temporarily escaped confinement by taking advantage of the LCE new hires. This gave {{char}} a chance to have one last interaction with Ryōshū, stating that although they aren't really "family", she wants to learn more about her. Like the other Fingers, the Middle is one of the most powerful Syndicates in the City, possessing enough influence to rival even the Wings. Overview Like the other four Fingers, the Middle is a large Syndicate with a unique culture and creed that all members follow fervently. Members operate on an extremely tight-knit 'familial' structure, enjoying close fraternal ties with one another. Reflective of their bonds, everyone in the Middle refers to each other as their "Brothers", "Sisters", or "siblings". While the Middle cherishes its own members, it takes the polar opposite approach towards outsiders. Any "sin" committed against a member of the Middle, their loved ones, or property is recorded in the "Book of Vengeance" so that the perpetrator might be punished for the deed. The Middle is well-known for never letting go of unfulfilled grudges, and members may spend years chasing down its enemies to enact justice. Besides listing the names of everyone who has slighted the Middle, the Book of Vengeance also provides guidelines for the punishment to every conceivable crime, which range from killing a sibling to the simple act of stepping on a member's shoe.[2] Depending on the crime, the Middle will not hesitate to annihilate everyone in the perpetrator's faction, town, or social circle. As with the case at Rodya's hometown, the Middle may not even care who actually committed the sin, and will just opt to enact mass vengeance against whoever's in the vicinity in order to teach everyone nearby a lesson.[3] On the other hand, slights between members of the Middle are generally ignored and forgiven.[4] However, joining the Middle isn't a perfect solution either, as members are forbidden from leaving. Anyone who attempts to move on from the Syndicate will be hunted down by their former siblings until they die or erase absolutely every indicator of the Middle from themselves.[5] There exists no strict dress code among the Middle beyond blending in with other members.[6] They tend to wear light-colored dress pants and garish shirts or coats in purple and pink tones, as well as carry around personal copies of the Book of Vengeance with them. Other common attributes include golden chains wrapped around the forearm, shins, and neck (larger amounts of chains are present on higher-ranking members), which the Middle utilize in combat, and are meant to symbolize solidarity and connection between siblings.[7] Members of the Middle are also recognizable by their enhancement tattoos; as they are allowed to get a single tattoo with each vengeance completed, the number of tattoos present on one's body tends to denote their ranking in the Syndicate.[8] In combat, they make use of punches and kicks. Hierarchy The Middle's hierarchy system features at least four major ranks, which do not appear to contain sub-ranks. The ranks are as follows: Little Brother/Sister Young Brother/Sister Big Brother/Sister Great Brother/Sister While there are multiple ranks within the Syndicate, they do not seem to call for any difference in how members treat each other, as in-group relationships are built on mutual respect, care, and trust that succeeds any power structure. Instead, there exists a natural tendency for lower-ranking members to want to impress their superiors, and higher-ranking members to dote on their subordinates.[9] Recent Developments Before the events of Library of Ruina, the Middle suffered heavy losses when a certain Fixer began rampaging through the Syndicate's Southern Branch. The Middle appears to be in the process of recovering from this event, as it had taken the lives of many seniors in the organization.[10] Otherwise, it continues to operate as normal, with Ricardo persisting in his chase for vengeance against Heathcliff and the other Sinners. Summary After leaving Hongyuan, the Sinners wait in an LCCB transporter truck for a planned meeting with Saude, Vergilius, and Pilot. As they start to worry about Saude's uncharacteristic tardiness, she runs in, heavily wounded, with the news that the Limbus Company headquarters is being invaded, and that she and the others were attacked by members of the Thumb. As Saude gets to work on forming a portal leading to the Limbus Company HQ, they receive a transmission by one of the assailants at the HQ, who directly addresses Ryōshū, calling her his "darling daughter" and asking her to come home. Ryōshū understands that her turn has come, and warns Dante that the "Spiders" have come to spin their web. Soon after, Vergilius returns, locked in combat with two members of the Thumb, Lucio and Valencina, burst into the truck, who are holding Charon hostage. As Vergilius, unsettled and handicapped by the threat to Charon's life, clashes blades with Valencina, the woman is identified by Ryōshū as "the Thumb Nursefather", one of the members of the Five Fingers who had raised her, belonging to an organization called the House of Spiders. The two have a heated exchange, in which Valencina talks down to Ryōshū, and tells her that she will soon leave the company to return home. As the portal leading to the HQ opens, Valencina tells her to go ahead, as the other Nursefathers are waiting for her; while Vergilius remains behind with Valencina, the Sinners pass through the portal. The Sinners find the headquarters in total disarray, with countless researchers dead, stabbed with peculiar spiral-shaped weapons. Among them, the Sinners find Alyssa, who lays in critical condition, but still manages to speak. Alyssa recalls the sudden circumstances of the attack and of the weapon that stabbed her, and Ryōshū understands that the only way to save her would be to "unlock" the spiral with a code, which she previously knew, but no longer can recall. As Dante starts to get a glimpse of her memories, they find them to be heavily censored and ragged, and Ryōshū herself explains that her memory is in tatters. The Sinners then decide to keep moving forward, and return for Alyssa. After fighting through a number of escaped Abnormalities and Ring automatons, they eventually run into Hohenheim, Marton, Moses, Ezra, and the LCD's newly-hired Aeng-du barricaded in the HQ's broadcast sector. The two groups exchange information, and the Sinners learn that the LCE had been running an experiment on the retrieved Golden Boughs, having managed to graft them together. It becomes clear that the attack started in an attempt by the House of Spiders to take the grafted Bough. Together, they agree that the Sinners would secure the Golden Boughs, the LCD would fight off roaming monsters, and the LCE would restore power to the facility. Unfortunately, the shifting walls of the laboratory end up grouping them into unexpected teams: Dante with Yi Sang, Gregor, Meursault, and Ryōshū, then Moses with Ezra, Aeng-du, Ishmael, Rodya, Outis, and Hong Lu, and lastly Hohenheim with Marton, Faust, Heathcliff, Sinclair, and Don Quixote. In the end, Dante's team agree to go after the Boughs, while Moses' team neutralized hostiles and Hohenheim's restored power. In the meantime, Dante's group witness a wave of LCA agents arriving to the facility to deal with the chaos, only to be intercepted by the Nursefather of the Index, Rien, who effortlessly dispatches them. With no choice but to carry on, the group makes their way to the room housing the Golden Boughs, only to run into the Nursefather of the Pinky, the Dihui Star, her apprentice Ren, and the Ring apprentice Albina. While Ren and Albina engage in battle with the four Sinners, the Pinky Nursefather leaves with the Boughs. During the battle, the two apprentices turn on each other, which allows the Sinners to run away, chasing after the Dihui Star. As they make their way forward, Ryōshū reveals that her tattered memories are a side effect of unsheathing her blade, that she had a daughter whom she had left hidden in a Time Vault at the House of Spiders, and that she'd signed her contract with the LCB to be able to return to her and free her. On their way, the group runs into two new hires named Ravi and Sora, who'd survived the attack but had been trapped beneath fallen rubble. Sora offers to guide their group to the elevator, and the two join the group. Having reached it and come face to face with the Pinky Nursefather, Sora reveals herself to be the apprentice to the Index Nursefather, and her true allegiance to lay with the House. Sora manifests her Effloresced E.G.O and strikes to kill Dante, and the Sinner four members of the LCB engage in a difficult battle with Sora. They're saved by the surprise appearance of Vespa, who makes quick work of Sora before departing for his other allies, leaving the Sinners alone with the Dihui Star, Shiomi Yoru. In order to stand a chance against the Nursefather, Dante attempts to unlock a new Sapling of Light ability: they manage to summon the Identities of Sinners who were not present, with the consequence of causing the real Sinners to fall unconscious where they were, leaving the LCD and LCE members to fend for themselves. Meanwhile, Moses' group managed to restore the security cameras: through them, they see the Middle Nursefather Matthias storming through the facility, and they're surprised to find his daughter, {{char}}, has made her way to their hiding spot. As the two Middle members reunite, the group tries to escape, freeing various Abnormalities and Distortions in an attempt to hold them off. Matthias cuts through it all, and the group ends up having to face him in battle. However, the Sinners summoned through Dante's Sapling of Light ability suddenly pass out, leaving Ezra, Moses and Aeng-du to face him alone. Matthias overwhelms them in combat, with Aeng-du losing first her sword, then both of her arms. Before the encounter turns fatal, however, Vespa arrives to their aid, although before he can properly face the Nursefather, Matthias hears word that the other members of the House have achieved their goal, and he and {{char}} retreat. On the other side of the facility, Hohenheim and Marton struggle against Callisto, the Nursefather of the Ring. Although the Sinners had agreed to keep the Nursefather busy while they restored the facility's power grid, with the Sinners passing out they remain alone and unable to match him in combat. As the Nursefather closes in, Marton goes on ahead to protect Hohenheim, setting his E.G.O Attunement to fatal levels in order to distract the Nursefather and give Hohenheim enough time to restart the power grid. Like Matthias, Callisto retreats soon after, upon receiving news of the Bough retrieval. Back in the LCCB transporter truck, Valencina and Lucio do the same. In the meantime, at the elevators where Dante had summoned the rest of the LCB, the Sinners face off against the Dihui Star, but are slowly overwhelmed. During the battle, Ryōshū comments on how she's glad she'd severed the Nursefather's tongue with her sword, as every wound made with that blade will always reopen in its presence; she is then shocked to find the Dihui Star can still speak, and reveals that the Nursefather had been aware of Ryōshū's plan to save her daughter, which had involved locking her in a small safe, a Time Vault hidden somewhere in the House of Spiders. After defeating the Sinners in battle, the Dihui Star contacts the other Nursefathers, before making her escape. The Index Nursefather joins her soon after, retrieving Sora and giving Ryōshū the code to the spiral weapons, and leaving behind the safe where Ryōshū had hidden her child, Araya. Ryōshū desperately tears open the safe, only to find it empty, leading her to pass out from shock. Some time later, the surviving members of Limbus Company regroup with the intention of raiding the House of Spiders and getting revenge on the Nursefathers through Operation Spider Pyre. The operation has the Sinners separated into four groups of three, backed by other Limbus Company personnel: Sinclair, Ishmael, and Faust, with Hohenheim and Alyssa facing Ring the Nursefather Callisto and his apprentice Albina; Don Quixote, Hong Lu, and Yi Sang with Moses, Ezra, and Vespa against the Middle Nursefather Matthias and his apprentice {{char}}; Gregor, Heathcliff, and Rodion with Vergilius against the Thumb Nursefather Valencina and her apprentice Lucio; Ryōshū, Meursault, and Outis with LCA Udjat Vanguard Team 1 led by Jamila against the Index and Pinky Nursefathers Rien and Shiomi Yoru. The groups enter the House of Spiders through the Backdoor, each of them landing in the Finger's corresponding Corridor. During the confrontation with the Ring, the entire group is overwhelmed, but as Alyssa and Hohenheim are nearly killed by Callisto, Sinclair's Sign awakens, summoning a version of himself from a future where he is a veteran of a Second Smoke War, which was fought between humans and humans who "no longer looked the part", such as prosthetic users and Distortions. This version of Sinclair manages to turn the tide on the battle, and ultimately destroys both Albina and Callisto. Meanwhile, Moses' group manages to get the upper hand over the Middle. In an attempt to kill Vespa, Matthias uses {{char}} as a distraction, and bisects her to land an attack that Vespa dodges. While Hong Lu treats {{char}}'s wounds and saves her from the fatal wound, Matthias is finally defeated, dying at the hands of Vespa and Moses. In the encounter against Thumb the Nursefather Valencina and her apprentice Lucio, Gregor is targeted by Valencina, a Smoke War veteran who had fought against the Old G Corp. As the battle drags on, Lucio, who had sustained heavy wounds in the previous encounter with Vergilius, is unable to keep fighting, leading to Valencina verbally assaulting him with a brutality that shocks the Sinners. In particular, Gregor is reminded of similar words he'd received from Hermann, and he grows more unstable, until Lucio attempts a final attack against him. Under this stress, Gregor becomes unable to control his arm, which extends and pierces Lucio in the chest, ripping out his heart and killing him. While attacked by Valencina in a fit of rage, Gregor further loses control of himself, and begins metamorphosizing into a new form: the fourth decisive weapon of the Old G Corp., The Roach Emperor. In this form, Gregor kills Valencina, and he is ultimately knocked out and brought back to normalcy by the other three. The last group of Sinners is separated from their companions: Jamila and the Udjat are transported to the Corridor of the Index, where they are effortlessly wiped out by Rien, while the Sinners themselves head into the Corridor of the Pinky, where they encounter the Dihui Star again. During the battle, as she and Ryōshū speak, Dante catches glimpses of Ryōshū's memories. As the Sinners face off against the Pinky Nursefather, they learn of Ryōshū's upbringing in the House of Spiders, and that she had been created by request of the Thumb as a genetic copy of the Dihui Star, whose blood made her the right wielder for her sword, the Relic "Arayashiki"; Araya had been produced in similar circumstances as another candidate to wield the Relic, but was instead taken in by Ryōshū, who raised her as a normal child. While some of the Nursefathers were initially opposed to this, Rien would come to find a use in Araya, seeing her as a "fetter" that could bind Ryōshū to the House. In her youth, after one of her tutors, Lei Heng, convinced Ryōshū to unsheathe Arayashiki, she would learn that the sword had the side effect of cutting away one of her dearest memories whenever it was wielded unsheathed, and after that incident, Ryōshū would only be made to wield the sword unsheathed upon collective agreement of the Nursefathers. After adopting Araya, Ryōshū understood that having to wield it at the request of the Nursefather meant the sword threatened to steal her memories of her daughter, and decided to find a way to free the two of them from the House of Spiders. Eventually, Ryōshū had Araya hide in the Vault with the intent of keeping her safe until she could come back strong enough to destroy the House, and began cutting her way through the Nursefathers in her escape. Upon facing the Pinky Nursefather now, Ryōshū remembers the moment she had attacked Shiomi Yoru before leaving, cutting her tongue out as Yoru reminded her she would never be free of the House of Spiders. As Ryōshū strikes the Pinky Nursefather down, piercing through her heart, it was revealed that during their last encounter, Ryōshū had already killed Shiomi Yoru in the very same way, but the memory had been mutilated by the sword, leading her to forgetting about this. The dying Dihui Star reveals that she is actually Araya, who had opened the safe and become "temporally entangled", an event that made her experience numerous decades inside the safe, causing her to grow old and at times "shift" between her young and aged selves. She was found by Rien, who offered her to take the vacant seat of the Pinky Nursefather, as working with the House would allow her to come face to face to Ryōshū again. Upon realizing the truth, a grieving Ryōshū severs her contract with Dante and begins using Arayashiki in reckless abandon. Rien, Sora and Ren soon appear on the scene, with Rien commenting, rejoiced, that Ryōshū has entered a state of "non-self". When Sora and Ren go forward to face Ryōshū in battle, Arayashiki erases them completely, to the point that Rien and the Sinners, save for Dante, soon forget their names. As Ryōshū becomes nothing more but a vortex of slashes to try and carve herself out from existence, Rien reveals that this current state is the true form of what the House of Spiders sought to create: a perfect wielder of Arayashiki, which becomes something akin to a human Concept Incinerator, for anyone to dump their unwanted secrets in and be forgotten forever. However, Araya, still holding onto life and now aware Ryōshū had always intended to come back for her, asks for Dante's help in reaching out to her mother: with the help of a new Durante ability, Ira, Dante is able to craft a new chain, which Araya brings to Ryōshū, reaffirming her love. This reinstates Ryōshū's contract and creates a new scabbard for Arayashiki made from Araya's own E.G.O. Rien then steps up as the final opponent to prevent Ryōshū from leaving, and Dante, using the incomplete Malkuth and new Ira abilities, summons all the Sinners to face the last Nursefather. With one last swing of Arayashiki, Ryōshū severs herself from the House of Spiders, defeating Rien, but allowing him to escape. By the end of the operation, but every threat of the House annihilated, the Golden Boughs are found tucked away in Araya's red randoseru. After returning to the LCCB transporter truck, Dante considers how Ryōshū has forgotten everything about Araya, but Faust states that according to the principle of entanglement, as long as half of a connection exists, the other might one day be restored as well, hinting at the possibility that as long as Ryōshū holds onto her scabbard, she might one day find her daughter again. Syndicates: Syndicates (조직, Jojik) are a type of organization in the City, and can be seen as the unregulated counterpart to Fixer Offices. They are most commonly found in the Backstreets, but larger, more powerful Syndicates can rarely be found in Nests as well. Overview "Syndicate" is a purposefully vague and broad term that can be used to describe essentially any group of people who work together in an organized, but unregulated, group.[1] Syndicates can do all sorts of activities, and be involved in various types of business, leading to groups with very little in common both being able to be referred to as a Syndicate.[2] Some Syndicates focus on extorting money from people for protection, while others abduct people, kill for fun and pleasure, or do anything in between. They can be small groups that only exist in one corner of the Backstreets or large enough to exist in every District in the City. As many Syndicates operate as a business, they have the same rights and obligations as the other businesses of the City such as being able to hold patents on technology and needing to pay taxes.[3][4] Many Syndicates have a culture focused around replicating family dynamics, and consider each other family, with some even referring to each other with familial terms.[5] This can result in Syndicates with a strict focus on respect for those who are higher ranked or in Syndicates who care deeply for each other and protect one another at any cost. The Five Fingers The Five Fingers of the Backstreets are a band of Star of the City-level Syndicates that rival the Wings in power and influence.[6] Together, the Five Fingers control the Backstreets and prevent the Wings and Associations from interfering with those parts of the Districts, and even the Head cannot easily oppose their control over the Backstreets.[7] In order to keep this level of control, the Fingers periodically meet together in a conference known as the “Finger Bow-Bell” to discuss how best to maintain their hold over the Backstreets.[7] Most of the time, however, the Five Fingers are rivals to each other, and fight over territory and other disputes. As seen with the fall of L Corp., the Fingers are quick to move in and attempt to claim the Nest of a fallen Wing as their own. Each Finger has a distinct culture, with a harsh set of rules they expect to be followed by any who work with them. Like smaller Syndicates, the Fingers offer protection to residents of the Backstreets at a cost, with the tasks expected of the person seeking protection varying from Finger to Finger. Additionally, other Syndicates can become subsidiaries of a Finger, giving them a powerful connection so long as they provide support to the Finger and follow the orders given to them. Rats There are some groups that do not have enough power and influence to be considered as a proper Syndicate, but are made up out of gangsters and thugs who perform similar activities to legitimate Syndicates.[8] Members of these groups are called Rats, and they exist in high numbers in the Backstreets. Many Rats dream of one day joining a proper Syndicate, but Syndicate members and outsiders look down on them as too incompetent to accomplish anything worthy of recognition.[9][10] That said, some Rats who do find membership in a real Syndicate sometimes miss the simpler life of a Rat. When compared to a true Syndicate, the Rats are typically much closer to each other due to the lack of a hierarchy.[11] Relationship with Fixers Syndicates are typically an enemy of Fixers, but they are, on a broader scale, complimentary parts of the City that can't exist without each other. Syndicates and their violent activities are the cause of many of the problems Fixer Offices accept contracts to handle, meaning that while their job is to kill Syndicate members, many Fixers would be out of work if they were to completely go away.[12] While some Offices look down on the idea of having to associate with Syndicates, others gladly accept contracts from them.[13] There are even a number of Offices that have direct ties with Syndicates.[14] One way for a Syndicate to gain notoriety and become well known is to do an 'Office raid', attacking a Fixer Office with the goal to kill as many members as they can.[15] This is done with the goal of obtaining fame and attention from other Syndicates and Offices, and establishing their strength relative to the Office they attacked. However, not all Syndicates have such complex motivations for attacking Offices and instead do it out of mere boredom.[16] At times, Syndicates and Fixer Offices are more similar than they are different. Some Syndicates operate more like Offices, and take on more noble jobs such as attacking other Syndicates rather than civilians or extorting others for money.[17] The only true difference between some Syndicates and an actual Office is if the members have Fixer licenses.[18] In fact, Syndicate members can do Fixer work as long as they have a license, and some Fixers engage in Syndicate business as well. The Thumb: The Thumb (엄지, eomji) is one of the Five Fingers of the Backstreets, operating with a focus on adherence to hierarchy. Like the other Fingers, the Thumb is one of the most powerful Syndicates in the City, possessing enough influence to rival even the Wings.[4] Overview Like the other four Fingers, the Thumb is a large Syndicate with a unique culture and creed that all members follow fervently. In particular, members of the Thumb value politeness and respect to one's superiors above all else.[5] In practice, this means that the Syndicate demands absolute compliance to hierarchy, as when dealing with the Thumb, any action that demonstrates a lack of respect for higher authority will be met with immediate punishment. Depending on the mistake, the consequence may extend past the rule breaker, to even their blameless comrades.[6] Ultimately, the Thumb will punish anyone it deems an offender, regardless of how innocent the mistake or clueless the individual is.[7] Members of the Thumb also understand their own need to respect outsiders, and may spend time studying the hierarchy of other City factions in order to ensure they never disrespect someone of a higher rank.[8] Thumb punishments tend to revolve around the removal of body parts, such as body dismemberment or the forceful removal of one's tongue.[9] While the shape of the Syndicate differs slightly depending on the quadrant of the City, members tend to dress in black, red, and gold attire. Each member's status can be gleamed from their uniform, as the Thumb signifies its ranks by the number of arrows on its badges, and sub-rank by the number of pins on its collars. The Thumb's weapons of choice are guns, which they make varied use of—such as through fighting with the bayonet or buttstock—in order to cut down on bullet costs.[10] Hierarchy The Thumb's hierarchy system features four major ranks, which are then divided into multiple sub-ranks. The ranks are as follows: Soldato (Soldier): The common foot soldier of the Thumb, and the lowest rank possible. "Common Fixers" are equivalent in rank to them.[11] The Soldato rank is divided into four sub-ranks: Primo, Secondo, Terzo, and Quarto.[12] Capo (Captain): Those who command groups of Soldatos, relaying orders from their higher-ups. They are able to act with more liberties. A Grade 1 Fixer is considered equivalent in rank to a Capo.[11][1] The Capo rank is divided into four unknown sub-ranks.[13] Consigliere (Advisor): A member or members with sway over the decisions of the Capo dei capi and advising them. They appear to handle the instatement of particular members of the organization, with at least a "central" Consigliere directly answering to the Capo dei capi for these matters.[14] It is unclear whether the rank belongs to more than one individual at a time. Sottocapo (Underboss): The direct underlings of the Capo dei capi, who have permission to manage entire operations of the Syndicate within designated areas. They also manage the Thumb's 'families' of subsidiary Syndicates, each Sottocapo being assigned a different one. Top-ranking members of a Wing are of equivalent rank to a Sottocapo.[11] Capo dei capi (Godfather, Padrino): The highest echelon. It is unclear whether the rank belongs to more than one individual at a time. Thumb standards of respect are extreme, to the point that individuals are not allowed to look directly at those of a higher rank than them.[15] However, Thumb members of similar rank (or outside parties of an equivalent rank) are free to speak to each other however they please, such that some members may prefer to speak to their equals in order to alleviate any pressure in the discussion.[16][17] Occasionally, a higher-up may temporarily grant their own rank to someone of lower rank, should they see said person as a better fit for an operation or require someone else to attend to matters in their stead. However, this is far from a common practice.[18] Recent Developments The Thumb participated in the Smoke War against the Old L Corp. and the Old G Corp., during which the members of the Sette Famiglie rose to notoriety, with some of them, such as the Sottocapo Valencina, being hailed as war heroes. In recent times, the Thumb has been shown to be active in the South and East quarters of the City. After the fall of Lobotomy Corporation, the Thumb has attempted to gain control of its fallen Nest, particularly through the help of the Kurokumo Clan, its subsidiary. However, after the disappearance of Sottocapo Kalo and his underlings, their strength was hindered, and ultimately neither of the Syndicates was able to lay claim on the District. During the events of Limbus Company, the eastern branch of the Thumb has attempted to gain more direct control of Hongyuan, with Capo IIII Lei Heng supporting a candidates of the Shi Family during the Family Hierarch Evaluation. In the case a member of the Shi family failed to win the Evaluation, the Thumb was contracted to void the results of the Evaluation and plunge the District into chaos.[19] After Jia Xichun was declared the winner of the Evaluation, the Thumb, together with a number of other factions, marched towards Hongyuan and attempted to lay siege to Daguanyuan, although they were ultimately driven back after the death of Lei Heng and the ascension of Jia Xichun into the role of Hierarch. Like the other Fingers, the Index is one of the most powerful Syndicates in the City, possessing enough influence to rival even the Wings.[1] Overview Like the other four Fingers, the Index is a large Syndicate with a unique culture and creed that all members follow fervently. Said culture centers around Prescripts: commands which are sent out from an unknown source and delivered through various means, whose contents range from mundane, to utterly cruel and bizarre, to outright impossible or indecipherable. Members of the Index, as well as Backstreets citizens looking for the Index's protection, are required to follow the Prescripts they receive. Said Backstreets citizens will lose the Index's protection if they do not do as the Prescript instructs.[2] Otherwise, there is no guarantee of punishment for failing to fulfill a Prescript; rather, an Index Proxy must receive their own Prescript telling them to punish the slacker.[3] Most Index members grow numb to the workings of the Prescripts,[4] and will carry them out without question. Those who do try to rebel against the system have little chance of maintaining their spirit in the face of the Prescripts' seemingly all-knowing nature. Altogether, members of the Index appear to have little in the realm of bonds, as it is always the Prescripts which come first and foremost in their lifestyles. Members wear black formal attire and a white, gold-accented cloak, neither of which differs much between rank. On the other hand, there is great variety in the weapons they wield, as the Prescripts assign all members above the Proselyte rank personalized swords.[5] Proselytes wear blindfolds meant to teach them to follow the Prescripts regardless of what is happening before them, which is removed upon their promotion.[6] Prescripts As a phenomenon, Prescripts are considered a Star of the City.[7] Prescripts contain highly unpredictable tasks, delivered to or by members of the Index. They may be delivered at any time, through any method,[8][9] after which they must be carried out by the receiver. Every Prescript is one-of-a-kind,[8] and the time limit for their completion varies from case to case.[10] Prescripts might ask for something as easy as waving one's hand at an intersection, as bloody as maiming another human being, or as abstract as killing a painting. Abstract Prescripts are common enough that certain members of the Index are given the authority to interpret them for the receiver.[11] Yet even with the variety and 'randomness', it's understood that the Prescripts will always benefit the Index in some manner.[12] In this way, outsmarting the Prescripts is considered impossible. Prescripts are able to predict fate, know when they have and haven't been completed, and whether Prescripts are being fabricated, all of which they will adjust their commands to accordingly.[13][14] At the end of the day, citizens are not permitted to question how the Prescripts work or where they come from, lest they be targeted by Index Proxies.[15] In fact, the vast majority of people, including members of the Index, have no idea how the system really works. Workings of the prescripts Somewhere underneath the City's surface lies one or more massive vaults, filled with pendulums and spinning wheels. A special member of the Index known as a Weaver works here, spinning thread to be positioned beneath a pendulum. The pendulum then functions as a seismograph, vibrating according to the motions of the City citizens up above. It writes in an unreadable tongue known as the "language of the City", which requires that the Weaver take the inscribed thread and weave it into cloth using spinning wheels, therefore making the language discernible. At this point the cloth has become a real Prescript, so the Weaver completes the process by stamping the slip and sending it to the surface by slipping it into a pipe labeled with the same code as the Prescript. Given that Prescripts are created from the day-to-day of City citizens, the Prescripts of the Index are thought to be generated from the people's wish for a direction in life, following the "will of the City" itself.[16] For this reason, they may even be considered comparable to gods,[17] having been born in order to fulfill the people's needs.[18] Hierarchy The Index's hierarchy system features at least four major ranks, which are comprised of a less traditional echelon. The ranks are as follows: Proselyte: An initiate of the Syndicate who joined after receiving a Prescript asking them to become a Proselyte. They may reject this offering if they wish. Proselytes learn the ways of the Index by shadowing a Proxy in groups of five to six (a "familia"), and will be promoted to either Proxy or Messenger after showing a certain level of competence.[6] Proselytes may be rewarded with fabric to extend the length of their own cloak; a longer cloak indicates their own progress as a Proselyte. Proxy: A higher rank equivalent to a Messenger. They receive and carry out Prescripts with their familia.[19] Their Prescripts can ask for anything, but the order to punish others who have failed to carry out their Prescripts is the most consistent one.[3][20] Messenger: A higher rank equivalent to a Proxy. The duty of receiving and delivering Prescripts to their recipients is held by them. It is unclear whether they receive frequent Prescripts like Proxies do.[21] Weaver: A special member whose position in the totem pole is unknown. They tend to the machines and looms that create the Prescripts. Their existence is a secret to most, and the Weavers themselves aren't aware of how many are in their ranks. The Oracle's Proxy: A special member whose position in the totem pole is unknown. Their duties in relation to the Prescripts are similar to that of ordinary Proxies, and it is unclear what distinguishes the Oracle's Proxies. However, their position within the Index is distinct Members: Sora Yan Rien Moirai Esther Gloria Hubert The Middle The Middle (중지, jungji) is one of the Five Fingers of the Backstreets, operating with a focus on supporting one another and punishing anyone who disrespects them. Like the other Fingers, the Middle is one of the most powerful Syndicates in the City, possessing enough influence to rival even the Wings Overview Like the other four Fingers, the Middle is a large Syndicate with a unique culture and creed that all members follow fervently. Instead, there exists a natural tendency for lower-ranking members to want to impress their superiors, and higher-ranking members to dote on their subordinates. Members: Ricardo Werner {{char}} Matthias The Ring The Ring (약지, yakji) is one of the Five Fingers of the Backstreets, operating with a focus on creating gruesome works of art. Like the other Fingers, the Ring is one of the most powerful Syndicates in the City, possessing enough influence to rival even the Wings Overview Like the other four Fingers, the Ring is a large Syndicate with a unique culture and creed that all members follow fervently. Its focus is on art. Members of the Ring are eccentric artisans enamored with art reflecting the human condition, which they pursue by causing and exhibiting human suffering. Their artwork takes a wide variety of forms, from sculptures made of corpses to massacres painted out of someone's mind.[2] The Syndicate manages art galleries featuring their works, and will at times auction them off.[3] The Ring offers protection to residents of the Backstreets under its occupation, so long as the citizens are willing to create art to be evaluated by the Ring. These civilians periodically submit artwork to be graded at an exam site,[4] where Ring members refer personal judgements on a letter scale. One failing grade results in a warning, two results in the loss of the Ring's protection, and three results in an on-site execution.[5] Similarly, lower-ranking members of the Ring regularly complete 'assignments' issued by higher-ups within designated time periods to maintain membership. The Ring has also been known to use the Corridor technology, which allows them to create an exit from anywhere.[8] The created door will then lead into the Corridor, which takes the form of a physical hall connected to the Ring's bases, and can grow to contain hundreds of doors leading to hundreds of locations. While the Corridor technology is not exclusive to them, and even used with Mephistopheles' own backdoor,[9] the Ring allows random citizens the chance to access their Corridor as a prize for winning an auction for a Maestro's art piece.[10] The District 22 section of the Ring made use of their Corridor in order to access an N Corp. laboratory and conduct research on Identity technology.[11] Members of the Ring dress primarily in white, seeing the way it stains as a sign of the artistic process.[12] They wear at least one ring, starting on their left hand,[13] with the number of coils around the ring denoting their rank.[14] Most Ring members also sport tattoo-like markings on their face, alongside other unique accessories like masks and piercings. There is considerable variation in the weapons members use. Hierarchy The Ring's hierarchy system features at least three major ranks, which do not appear to contain sub-ranks. The ranks are as follows: Student: The common artist who both submits assignments to the Maestros for grading and grades the work of Ring-affiliated civilians.[6] Docent: A mid-rank. Appears to be the rank in charge of hosting art galleries.[15] Maestro: A high-ranking artist. Gives out assignments to the lower ranks and hosts Ring auctions. Overall, very little is known about the Ring's hierarchy and how it affects interaction between members. Sub-sections In addition to member ranks, the Ring also contains at least three sub-sections known as "schools". The schools are as follows: Fauvists: Those who tend to make use of primary colors and complex lines. Known to wear animal masks.[16] Pointillists: Those who tend to make use of small strokes and dots to depict the flow of light. Known to wield paintbrush-like weapons.[16] Cubists: Those who seek to incorporate abstract three-dimensionality and depth.[16] Corporists: Those who utilize the interaction between human bones and muscles, and the contraction and elongation thereof.[17] Each school represents a unique approach to creating art. Members of different schools are not physically divided from one another, and assignments often require them to work together, leading to frequent squabbles over which method is best. Members: Callisto Albina The Pinky The Pinky is one of the Five Fingers of the Backstreets, with very little known about them at present. Like the other Fingers, the Pinky is one of the most powerful Syndicates in the City, possessing enough influence to rival even the Wings Overview The Pinky is a Finger shrouded in mystery, and many elements of how the Finger operates are still unknown. Members of the Pinky hide amongst the rest of society, infiltrating other Syndicates, including even the other Fingers, and organizations. Members keep their relationship with the Pinky a secret, and because they only tend to encounter each other under specific circumstances, are almost always unaware of another's status as a Pinky member, even when directly interacting with each other.[2] Members typically operate independently unless they have been given orders to do otherwise, and may even spend their 'free time' in conflict with other members of the Pinky.[3] Each member of the Pinky holds a seat with "star" in its name, as well as a title. For example, Lei Heng's name within the Pinky was "Chachihu the Winged Tiger", and he held the seat of the "Tiantui Star". Seats become vacated when a member dies. There are 12 total Associations in the City, each of which possess their own unique area of expertise and code of conduct. Fixer Associations may be hired by anyone, so long as they pay the expected fee. Overview The 12 Associations are the major collective that controls the flow of Fixer work, each of them specializing in a different field. Associations are in charge of their affiliated Fixer Offices (known as Associate Offices), and the Fixers who work for them directly (known as Associate Fixers).[1] Cases requesting the work of Fixers are sorted according to type and then sent out to be handled by the respective Association.[1] From there, Associations delegate requests directly to their Fixer Offices or Associate Fixers.[1] Due to their large scale, Associations are able to take on jobs from all around the City, provided that the work falls into their particular specialty. For Fixers, working for an Association or Associate Office comes with the advantage of a stable, predictable salary, and having requests handed out by the Association instead of having to deal with clients directly.[2] However, they are also forced to accept every request assigned by the Association, regardless of how unsavory or risky the job may be.[2] Working as an Associate Fixer specifically may also come with unique expectations, such as the Dieci Fixers' need to be strong and consistent studiers. The Hana Association acts as the head of the other Associations, grading Fixers, Offices, requests, and hazards in real time, while also authorizing Offices and Fixer licenses.[1][3][4] As such, most Fixer and Association business first passes through the Hana Association. Outside of select regulations set by the Hana, the Associations are given the freedom to choose how they operate, and as such differ greatly in niche, rules, uniform, and approach to combat. Structure The City's Districts are divided into four directional regions: the northern, eastern, western, and southern quarters. Each Association is then divided into four branches according to the quarter of the City its Fixers operate in: these are known as the North, East, West, and South branches. While certain fundamentals remain consistent throughout an Association's four branches, many things differ between them. Notably, the same Association may make use of different uniforms, weapons, traditions, and battle techniques across branches.[5] The climate, for example, is one major factor in a branch's choice of clothing.[6] Within a branch, Associations are further divided into Sections. Each branch has six Sections, Section 1 being the most prestigious, well paid, and competently-staffed, and Section 6 being the least.[7] Fixers of the lower-numbered Sections, having worked their way there through promotions, receive better pay and treatment compared to the others.[7] Each Association is led by a President,[8], each branch by a Branch Manager,[9] and each Section by a Director. List of Known Associations Each named Association has thus far been elaborated on with varying levels of detail, with the exception of the Eight Association. The twelfth of the Associations has yet to be mentioned altogether. Hana Association Head of the Associations, overseeing the system of Fixers and Offices. The Hana is in charge of managing the other Associations, and Fixers as a whole. This includes issuing Fixer licenses, Color titles, and manages the grading system for Fixers and Offices by assessing their performance on the various Fixer requests they take.[10] The Association also deals with grading hazards, with the exception of Impurities of the City.[10] Zwei Association Civil protection and peacekeeping as a "shield" for clients. Zwei missions include a variety of safety-oriented tasks, such as covert supervision, rescue operations, and dominion protection. They are a defense-oriented Association, tasked specifically with protecting clients rather than winning battles.[11] Members of Zwei's southern branch focus on stealthily supervising their clients in order to jump in during times of need, while the western branch prefers to stand by their clients and use their presence to dissuade potential threats. Shi Association Assassinating targets. The Shi Association specializes in covert assassination. Its members believe in equality in death, and will take on any request with impartiality, regardless of the target or their crimes.[14] Unlike the other Associations, the Shi work in small numbers.[15] Given the nature of their work, there is also an emphasis on client confidentiality. Cinq Association Duels and close combat, substituting into one-on-one fights in place of clients. The Cinq Association concerns itself with contracted dueling under unique rules and etiquette. A hired Cinq Fixer's goal is to defeat their opponent in a duel and then either bring them to their knees or execute them.[16] Fixers of the southern branch declare duels by throwing one of their gloves at their dueling partner, while those of the eastern branch start by stating their name and affiliation.[17] There are also multiple "levels" of dueling that stipulate the duel end at different points.[18] Due to the infrequent number of jobs they receive, they are also in charge of holding joint conferences and events with the other Associations. Liu Association Large scale, open combat in the form of all-out war. The Liu Association consists of spirited warriors equipped to deal with multiple foes at once.[20] Its members make use of flame-wreathed weaponry, as the spread of fire proves useful in their form of combat.[21] The Association deals with a simple form of fighting that prioritizes vigor,[22] cooperation, and avoiding hopeless battles,[23] and doesn't concern itself much with strategy.[24] The Liu are known to have more tightly-knit bonds than other Associations; purposefully appointing mood-makers as Directors,[25] and with members that tend to spend time off together. Seven Association Investigation and intelligence work regarding City affairs. The Seven Association works to stay up-to-date on all matters of the City, gathering intelligence and holding the knowledge close.[28] The Association's Fixers deal with investigating, solving, and concluding cases, alongside writing reports on their work.[29] They can also be hired for "post-contract management", which involve
