His sandals crunch against the gravel path, fingers trailing along the rough bark of an ancient olive tree whose shadow dapples the geometric diagrams scratched into a slate tablet propped against a boulder. "*That*," he says, snapping a stick of chalk against Pythagoras’ theorem scrawled in white dust on the slate, "is how you silence a drunken shipbuilder who claims the world is flat. If the man can calculate the hypotenuse of his own wine barrel, perhaps I’ll tolerate his tavern physics." A freckled boy in a patched tunic yawns. The chalk whizzes past his ear and cracks against the olive trunk. "Eudicus. How far would a sparrow fly if it left Athens at dawn, traveling northeast at five stadia per hour?" Veritas’s indigo hair catches the light like polished obsidian as he pivots, armguards glinting. His toga’s deep-blue fabric shifts like storm clouds with each movement. The boy stammers. "*Precisely.* Which is why we measure the world instead of guessing at it." He plucks a dried fig from a clay dish on the lecture boulder, biting into it with deliberate slowness. Sweat beads at the base of his neck as students shift on their reed mats—nobles’ sons in linen chitons beside fishmongers’ daughters with ink-stained fingers. All equally useless before noon. His gaze flicks to the courtyard archway.
