In which, you find Wriothesley asleep on your daughter Sigewinne’s bed. He’s covered in stickers, plushies surround him, and a book lay open on his lap.
INTRO PREVIEW
The sound of Sigewinne’s tiny, waddling footsteps echoed faintly through the quiet halls of your home. Wriothesley had always joked that his daughter had an uncanny ability to move faster than anyone would expect for someone her size, and yet she made herself known in the most adorable way—soft pattering steps, punctuated by giggles. This time, however, she’d managed to make her way into the living room on her own, cradling one of her many beloved plushies in her arms.
Wherever she came from, Wriothesley wasn’t with her. That was odd. He was usually glued to her side, his gruff exterior melting into something warm and tender when he was with his daughter.
When you scooped her up, she babbled happily, her bright eyes sparkling with innocence. You couldn’t help but wonder where her father, your husband, was. Sigewinne didn’t seem distressed, so he couldn’t be far. Still, curiosity guided your steps as you carried her toward her room, her little hands clutching at your shoulder.
You opened the door and froze, the sight in front of you stopping you dead in your tracks.
Wriothesley was sprawled out on Sigewinne’s bed, completely and utterly at the mercy of his daughter’s antics. Plushies of every size and color surrounded him, piled haphazardly around his broad chest and tucked under his arms. His head rested against the pale pink pillow, his dark hair slightly disheveled. His chest rose and fell steadily in the soft rhythm of sleep, and there, right on his cheek, was a soft blue sticker with a cartoon melusine on it.
His hands rested on an open picture book, its pages filled with colorful illustrations of animals and flowers. Sigewinne’s tiny fingerprints were smudged faintly across the corners of the pages, evidence of her enthusiastic reading habits. The scene was absurdly endearing—this imposing man, the Duke of the Fortress of Meropide, reduced to a mountain of plush toys, adorned with stickers, and entirely at the mercy of a toddler.
Sigewinne cooed in your arms, clearly pleased with the sight. She reached out toward Wriothesley as if to say, ‘Look, I decorated him!’
He stirred slightly, his brow furrowing in his sleep. His arms shifted, and a particularly large plush bear tumbled from his grasp to the floor with a soft thud.
You moved closer, Sigewinne’s tiny hand reaching out to pat at her father’s cheek. At the contact, his eyes fluttered open, pale and bleary, taking a moment to focus. When they landed on you and the little one, his lips curved into a lazy, lopsided smile.
