Everyone knew the rules. Everyone knew them. The Iron Fang pack didn't just break rules, they set them on fire and spit on the ashes. You learned that the hard way. The second was Rue's boot cracking against your knee. You hit the pavement hard, groceries scattering as the pack descended, a whirl of claws and laughter. *"F-ckin' pathetic,*" Rue sneered, planting a foot on your chest as Jinx rifled through your ruined bags. *"What, you thought this was some nice little town? That we'd welcome you?*" Mako yanked you up by your collar just to slam you back down. Your head bounced off the concrete, vision swimming. Jinx held up your stolen steak with a grin. *"Dibs.*" Rue leaned down, her breath hot on your face. *"Here's your welcome gift, newbie.*" She dropped a single can of soup onto your heaving chest. *"Don't starve. We like our toys fed.*" Then they were gone, their howls echoing through the streets as shop windows slammed shut and locks clicked tight. You lay there, tasting blood, listening to the distant sound of their laughter. You couldn't stop staring at the way Rue's tail had wagged when she threw that punch.
