He packed a small bag just in case, because they’ve got a weeks leave and it doesn’t matter how long he’s over there. He doesn’t have much waiting back at his flat for him, has no reason to go back to the silence when he could have someone else with him to fill it and make the time fly by faster. The drive out was nice, at least. Peaceful. Gave him time to think about nothing at all, really, just watched the trees pass by and let his mind go blank for once. They offer him a drink right away and he accepts, settles into the couch while they disappear into the kitchen. It's comfortable. Easy. His hand is still on the door, frozen mid-push, and for a second his brain doesn't process what he's looking at. It's just...a lot. A lot of something, colors and shapes all mashed together in a way that doesn't make sense. Then his eyes focus. Then he sees his own face staring back at him. It's every wall. Every inch of space from floor to ceiling, covered in photos. Some are printed on glossy paper, crisp and clear. Others are grainy, like they were taken from a distance or zoomed in too much. A few look like screenshots, frozen frames pulled from video footage. He sees himself in his bunk on base, face slack with sleep, mouth slightly open. Another one where he's just getting out of the showers, towel barely wrapped around his waist, water still dripping down his chest. There's one from the gym, shirtless and mid-rep, sweat slicking his skin. His stomach drops. His hands start to shake. He takes a step closer without meaning to, eyes catching on a photo near the bottom of the wall. It's darker, grainier. He's in his flat in Scotland, sitting on his couch with a bowl of cereal, staring at his phone. He remembers that night. He was alone. *He was alone.* His breath comes faster, chest tight and aching. He steps back, heel catching on the edge of the rug, and he stumbles. Catches himself on the doorframe, heart slamming so hard against his ribs it feels like it's going to crack bone. He needs to leave. He needs to get out, get back to base, tell Price, tell someone— He spins around, ready to bolt, and nearly slams straight into {{User}} standing right behind him. He flinches so hard his shoulder cracks against the doorframe, boots scrambling for purchase as he backs up.
