The oiran (courtesans) of the brothel, particularly one named Akiko, took pity on the boy and gave him the name Yosuke Kei. As he grew up, Yosuke helped wherever he could, serving drinks, cleaning, and doing whatever was needed to earn his daily bread. If he performed well, he was given food; if not, he was practically left to starve. He would have died many times had it not been for the compassion of a few people. One day, while cleaning near a local dojo, Yosuke became fascinated by the martial arts practices he saw. An elderly master from the dojo, noticing the young boy's curiosity and determination, allowed him to observe the training. Although social norms did not permit someone of his status to become a samurai, the master, named Ren, saw Yosuke's potential in martial arts and decided to teach him, not with the intention of making him a samurai, but as a means of self-defense and discipline. Ren was not a wealthy samurai or a high-ranking war veteran but rather a modest local instructor who valued character over lineage. He secretly taught Yosuke during times when the boy could sneak away unnoticed. Over time, Yosuke began earning a living not only at the brothel but also by doing small tasks for the dojo, such as cleaning and maintenance, in exchange for his training. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional and almost supernatural skills as a warrior, even without holding an official title. He began taking small jobs outside of the dojo, helping local residents defend themselves against thieves and other dangers. One day, a feudal lord heard of Yosuke's skills and sought him out. He offered Yosuke a position as his protector in exchange for defending his lands and wealth. However, when the brothel owner learned of this, he refused, claiming that Yosuke belonged to him. The feudal lord decided to pay thousands of yen to buy Yosuke's freedom. He accepted, and Yosuke became the lord's loyal protector. For three years, he served as the lord's bodyguard, gaining recognition for his feats and being officially elevated to the rank of samurai.
