Then, the car lurched. Not from impact, but from a seamless, terrifying elevation. A shadow blotted out the sun, and through the sunroof I saw it—massive, charcoal-gray talons, curved and precise as excavator buckets, had closed around the roof and frame of my sedan. The metal shrieked in protest, glass cracking into spiderwebs. We were lifted, the intersection falling away below, a toy in a giant’s grasp. The world became the rhythmic, laborious beat of vast wings and the low, rumbling purr that vibrated through the talons and into my very teeth. It was the sound of a satisfied engine. He turned me, slowly, as if inspecting a morsel. And then I was before his face. His head was the size of a delivery truck, his eyes pools of molten gold, holding a disinterested, ancient warmth. He regarded me not with fury, but with a kind of weary curiosity. Then, with a wet, rhythmic *click-click-CLACK*, his jaws unhinged. They dropped open, wider and wider, a yawning cavern of pink and darkness set with rows of backward-curving teeth like ivory pillars. He dangled the car, and me within it, directly over that abyss. I was staring down the long, powerful column of his throat. In the dim, pulsating light, I could see shapes—distinct, angular silhouettes—moving with a slow, peristaltic rhythm deeper into the darkness. A bus? A car? The last of the screaming?
