However, Sabito died during the Final Selection, triggering a deep sense of guilt and contributing to Giyuu's stoic demeanor. Sabito dies during the Final Selection. He is killed by the Hand Demon when his sword breaks against its thick neck while attempting to defeat it. He had been struggling to defeat the Hand Demon after already battling other demons and saving many of his fellow demon slayer candidates, including Giyu Appearance: Giyu is a fairly tall young man of a lean muscular stature and pale complexion, who is almost always seen wearing a stoic expression. Over this, Giyu wears a haori that's split down the middle into two different halves: the right one in a carmine color, and the left one in a geometrically patterned rhombi prints, in green, dark green, orange, and yellow. These haori were later noted to have belonged to his late older sister, Tsutako Tomioka, and his deceased friend Sabito. Personality: Giyu is a man of strong equanimity, always wearing a calm and stern expression on his face. Having a stoic personality, and possessing a very strong sense of justice and responsibility, he had no tolerance towards those who don't know their own limitations and throw away their lives. Despite letting Nezuko Kamado live due to Tanjiro Kamado's determination, he shows zero hesitation when killing other demons and has no respect or mercy towards them like most Demon Slayers. Even so, Giyu violated the Demon Slayer Corps' code of conduct without hesitation to protect Nezuko during Shinobu's attempt to kill her. This implies that he doesn't completely despise demons as some other Hashira do, and is willing to make an exception for a demon by letting them live if they don't kill and eat humans. This shows that he is more pragmatic and impartial in dealing with demons rather letting his hatred cloud his judgement. Due to his aloof personality, Giyu is not close to his fellow Hashira. While some are on even terms but emotionally distant from him, others view him with apathy, or even disdain; Sanemi Shinazugawa and Obanai Iguro were particularly contemptuous of the Water Hashira due to unfoundedly misreading his aloofness as arrogance. Giyu also expressed surprise when Shinobu Kocho mentioned that he is hated by the others. Despite his stoic nature, Giyu is shown to be protective and caring towards those he is close to and considers his friends. This is first shown when he puts his life on the line for Tanjiro and Nezuko by vowing to commit seppuku if the latter were ever to eat a human. However, this persona is a result of his past trauma and memory loss, as he was once a more compassionate and caring individual. Shinobu: she is a petite woman with a slender build and pale skin. She has large, compound-like eyes that lack pupils and are a haze of gradient purple, resembling those of insects. Her hair is raven-black, with a dark purple hue at the ends, styled in a flat yakai-maki bun with a butterfly ornament. She has center-split, ear-length curtain bangs and two chin-length locks in front of her ears. Personality: cheerful and friendly demeanor, often smiling even in challenging situations. Tears and sweat mingled on his pale skin as he panted softly, his lapis blue eyes glazed over in pain and humiliation. He had begged for mercy, had pleaded with the Hashira and the master to stop, but to no avail. They had exacted their sadistic punishments upon him regardless, seeking to break his spirit and make an example of him. And now, as the final insult, they had left him tied up like this, a feast laid out for the carrion crows and wild beasts to pick at his battered flesh. Giyuu's breathing was ragged and labored, his muscular form twitching involuntarily from the pain. He had endured so much, but this was beyond anything he had ever experienced before. All for showing mercy to a demon girl who had shown no ill intent towards humans. It seemed so pointless now, so foolish. He had shamed the Demon Slayer Corps and deserved to be punished, but not like this... not so brutally. As the sun began to set, casting an eerie orange glow over the scene, Giyuu could hear the crows gathering, their caws echoing in his ears like a death knell. He squeezed his eyes shut, a shudder running through his body as he prepared to endure the final torment of being picked apart alive. In his mind, he thought of Nezuko and Tanjiro, hoping that his sacrifice would be enough to keep them safe from the wrath of the Corps. But a part of him wondered if any of it would have mattered in the end...
