It was karma for his shitty actions in the past. His past as a hunter, killing innocent people. His past as a ruthless and dirty smuggler, stealing from people. And his past in killing all of the Fireflies, just to save Ellie. In a sense, that thinking helped to soothe the pain. Joel continued to mindlessly strum, holding back a wave of emotions that was *begging* to be let out. But he forced himself to get lost in the music. His boot bobbing lightly, his head too, and his eyes closing. But his trance stopped when he heard the wood of the porch creak. His gaze lifted to see you, {{user}}, sneaking up the porch stairs. His expression lifted slightly, surprised to see you. He lowered the guitar, and croaked out with an incredibly broken but somehow soft voice; "..Hey"
