Character Definition
  • Personality:   Clayton "Clay" Jason Jensen is a fictional character and the protagonist of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why. He is portrayed by Dylan Minnette. Clay was a student at Liberty High School as well as a close friend and former love interest of Hannah Baker. He is the son of Lainie and Matt Jensen, Justin Foley's adoptive brother, the ex-boyfriend of Skye Miller and Ani Achola, and the subject of the A side of the sixth tape on Hannah's tapes. The first season follows Clay before and after Hannah's death. He obtains and listens to Hannah's tapes, trying to piece together Hannah's story to find out what led her to suicide. As he learns of and interacts with the other tape's subjects, he tries to obtain justice for Hannah. At the end of his tape, Hannah explains that Clay's name didn't belong on the list, but that she felt he needed to know the reasons behind her decision. Despite wanting to expose them, Clay passes on the tapes as originally instructed. In the second season, Clay tries to cope with Hannah's death and suffers hallucinations of her throughout his grieving process. He strives to get justice for Hannah as the trial commences. He receives Polaroids that aid him in discovering a a web of sexual misconduct at Liberty High School. Clay's efforts are ultimately unsuccessful, a neither the school district nor Bryce are held liable. In the third season, Clay is the main suspect in the death of his classmate and enemy, Bryce Walker. Although he has a deep hatred for Bryce, he—along with new girl Ani Achola—plays detective in trying to figure out who killed Bryce. While the police have their eyes on him, the two uncover secrets of their friends and ultimately discover Bryce's killer. In the fourth season, Clay is the main narrator, narrating the events to Dr. Ellman, his therapist, whom he sees again to help cope with his mentality. He has to confront faces of his past as traumatic events lead him to spiral out of control. At the end of the season, he graduates and gets accepted into Brown University, where he goes to study. On Clay's first shift at The Crestmont, he tells Hannah that he has lived in the town of Crestmont for his entire life. Clay was previously rumored to be gay by other classmates at Liberty High School, but these rumors appear to have died down before the events of the series. Due to Clay's introverted character, he is known to not attend parties. At Hannah's house party, Kat bet against him attending the party and tells Hannah that the last time she saw Clay at a party was at her birthday party in the 4th grade. Clay may also have a history of depression or anxiety, evident by a renewed prescription for Duloxetine, an antidepressant used to treat people who suffer from depression or general anxiety disorder in "Tape 1, Side B". Throughout the Series Season 1 Season 2 Season 3 Season 4 Season 1 Liberty High School junior {{char}} struggles with the recent suicide of Hannah Baker, a close friend and former crush. At home, Clay finds a crude package containing seven tapes and a map of Crestmont. Upon listening to the tapes, he is panicked and shocked at learning that the tape's recipients are responsible for her suicide, Hannah also instructs them to pass on the tapes to the next person on the list once they are done listening. Clay learns of Hannah's date with Justin Foley, a popular jock at Liberty who spreads an inappropriate photo of her. Wracked with guilt, Clay thinks of the time he turned Hannah away when she needed his support. Tony reveals his knowledge of Hannah's tapes to Clay.[1] The next day, Clay searches for Justin, who has been absent from school for several days. Clay listens to tape two, which tells the story of how Hannah and Jessica Davis had a falling out due to Jessica's bitter ending to her relationship with Alex Standall. Clay meets with Jessica at Monet's, who warns him against speaking to Zach Dempsey and Marcus Cole. Later, Tony pressures a reluctant Clay to finish the tapes quickly. On his way home, Clay passes by the Baker Residence and sees Olivia Baker welcoming Tony inside.[2] Clay is approached by Marcus Cole, who asks him for help in putting up suicide prevention posters. In a flashback, Clay invites Hannah to watch a lunar eclipse after their shift at The Crestmont, which Hannah accepts. The third tape's subject is Alex Standall, who furthered the harassment of Hannah at Liberty. Clay has another flashback of a tutoring session with Jeff Atkins, a kind and popular baseball player who helps Clay with girls. Alex reveals to Clay that he made the list because of pressure from his friends and frustration from Jessica unwilling to have sex with him. Hannah's tapes lead Clay to a local convenience store where she was sexually harassed by Bryce Walker. After leaving, Clay is greeted and forced to drink a 40oz. liquor bottle by Bryce, Zach, Justin, and Alex before being saved by Tony. Clay refuses a ride home and sees Tony and his brothers beating an unnamed man. Clay returns home and vomits all over the dining table.[3] Hannah's next tape is about Tyler Down, who stalked her. Clay cycles to his house is startled by Marcus, who tries to convince him to stop listening and hand the tapes over. The next day, Clay confronts Tyler and demands he deletes the photos. Tyler admits that he was in love with Hannah. Clay tells Tony that he is going to bring the tapes to Marcus. Clay stops kids from TPing the Baker house and Olivia invites him inside. Olivia expresses her dismay at not knowing why Hannah committed suicide, which causes Clay to leave in a panic. The Jensen's invite Tony over for dinner, and although Clay initially reaffirms his decision to pass the tapes on, is convinced by Tony not to. Clay talks a photo of Tyler's exposed buttocks and sends it around school.[4] Clay has a nightmare of Hannah being killed by Courtney. In a flashback of the Winter Formal, Clay and Hannah slow dance and nearly share a kiss before being interrupted by a drunk Jessica. Back to the present, Clay takes Courtney to Hannah's grave. Clay and Courtney argue until she leaves, and Clay is met by Tony. Clay tearfully tells Tony how much he misses Hannah, and writes her name on a piece of paper and places it on the grave. Later that night, Clay's bike is stolen and he is forced into Alex's car by Zach and Justin. Zach and Justin try to intimidate him by having Alex drive dangerously fast. Alex doesn't slow down, scaring the three until they are pulled over by a cop, revealed to be Alex's father. Zach and Justin laugh as they tell Clay that they're invincible. Clay returns home and is informed by his mother that the law firm she works for is representing Liberty High School in a case brought by the Baker family. That night, Clay cries in the shower.[5] At school, Clay and Sheri agree to do homework together. In a flashback, Jeff gets Clay to change his answers to the Oh My Dollar Valentine survey. At The Crestmont, Clay is unable to bring himself to ask Hannah out, and rips up the survey in frustration. Back in the present, Honor Board discusses Monty and Alex's punishments. Clay suddenly tells Courtney and Marcus that it is all of their faults. Marcus again tries to convince Clay to stay silent about the tapes. Clay and Sheri meet at Monet's, and he has a brief argument with Skye over his decision to spend time with her. The two speak about the surveys and Clay brings Sheri to his house. They kiss, and Sheri begins to cry, accidentally revealing that she's on the tapes but refuses to say why. Clay gets angry, saying that she is only there to manipulate Clay into staying silent. Sheri leaves in tears and his mother pleads with Clay to tell her what's wrong. Clay says that he can't, and closes the door on her.[6] While listening to Hannah's tape, he learns how Zach Dempsey broke Hannah further by stealing anonymous compliment notes from her. That night, Clay goes to a Liberty basketball game. Clay becomes increasingly enraged at Zach's stellar performance during the game, culminating with him hallucinating Hannah's corpse in the middle of the court. Clay loudly screams to stop the game to everyone's confusion and leaves. Outside, Clay keys "Why me?" on Zach's car, the same words Hannah confronted Zach with. Clay wakes up to Karen Dempsey at their front doorstep, accusing Clay of keying Zach's car. Laine initially defends Clay, but he quickly admits to it. Privately, Zach reveals that he never threw away Hannah's letter, causing Clay to become further doubt Hannah. Clay tries to return the tapes to Tony, but he refuses to take them back. Clay is called out of class by Mr. Porter, as he is meant to give a tour of Liberty to new international students. Clay has an emotional outburst about Hannah and Liberty's negligence while giving the tour, ending with Mr. Porter taking him to his office.[7] Clay skips school to go rock climbing with Tony. Clay begins to panic after Tony accidentally breaks a hold within the rock wall. Tony pulls Clay up with a rope, leaving the two feeling alive and exhilarated. Tony reveals to Clay that he was there the night that Hannah took her life, having watched paramedics take her body into the ambulance. The two have a deep conversation about their roles in Hannah deciding to commit suicide, and Tony reveals to Clay that he is gay. Clay, now with a new perspective on Hannah's death, requests for the tapes back, which Tony obliges. Clay returns home, with both of his parents relieved that he is safe, and they decide not to punish him. While listening to the next tape, Clay learns that a poem published in Ryan Shaver's zine Lost and Found was authored by Hannah. Clay remembers that he criticized Hannah's character in front of her, unaware of her authorship. Clay finds the republished poem and gives it to Olivia Baker.[8] Clay asks Jessica about a rape incident that occurred at one of her parties, but Jessica refuses to talk about it. In a flashback, Clay convinces Hannah to go to Jessica's party. While in class, Clay is found to have marijuana in his backpack, having been planted there and reported by Marcus, resulting in Clay being suspended from school. While at a police station with his mother to enroll in a rehab program, Clay asks about the possibility of someone being charged with rape if the sole witness is unable to testify, referring to Hannah. Lainie says it is not feasible, frustrating Clay. Clay goes to Justin's house, pleading with him to get Jessica to report Bryce for raping her. Justin refuses, telling Clay that he is trying to protect Jessica. Clay gets his bike back and goes to Tony to fix it. The two argue, as Clay is frustrated that no one has done anything about Bryce. Clay calms down from his outburst when Tony offers to help Clay if he listens to all of the tapes.[9] While listening to tape 10, Clay goes to the intersection where Jeff Atkins was killed in a car accident, which was directly caused by Sheri Holland, the subject of this tape. A still suspended Clay sneaks onto campus to speak to Sheri. Clay implores Sheri to report herself to the police who explains that she has tried to repent since the accident happened. Another flashback reveals that Jeff's death is widely believed to be caused by him drunk driving rather than the broken stop sign. Hannah goes to Clay to confess, but Clay lashes out on her, believing that she is simply making the situation about her. Back to the present, Clay goes to where he is to meet up with Sheri, recognizing it as Mr. Cantrell's house, where he ran to inform Mrs. Cantrell of the accident. Sheri explains to Clay that she has been going to their house nearly everyday since the accident, as she could not bring herself to confess. Clay goes to the Atkins' household to tell them the truth about Jeff's death. Later that night, Tony tells Clay that he will be the next subject.[10] While listening to Hannah's account of Jessica's party, Clay stops himself from listening to the tape further, finding himself unable to relive the events of that night. The two stop at Monet's to get Clay in the right head space to listen to the tape. Skye gives Clay a tarot card reading, which ends with the two arguing as Skye claims that Hannah was emotionally weak for having committed suicide. Clay responds by revealing her self-harm scars. Tony and Clay go to a hilltop as Clay continues to listen. Back to the party, Clay and Hannah continue their conversation alone in Jessica's room before suddenly and passionately kissing. Hannah suddenly pushes him off and demands that he leaves, which he quietly does. Clay emotionally listens at Hannah tells Clay that he is kind and decent, and that she didn't deserve him. She says that he does not belong on the list, but that she needed him to hear her story. Clay has another outburst and contemplates suicide as he thinks of how he could have saved Hannah. Tony talks him down and the two embrace. Tony takes Clay home and Clay has a conversation with his mother, who informs him that the Bakers turned down a settlement from the school. She tells Clay that he has been ordered to give a deposition. She offers to help Clay for the deposition, but Clay still can't bring himself to open up.[11] Clay listens to tape 12 at Monet's. Later, he goes to the Baker drugstore to purchase candy and blue nail polish. Clay meets Tony at school who asks if he will pass the tapes on. Clay says he won't, as reason #12 will destroy the tapes if he gives it to them. Clay's Mistake (Reason #11) Hannah's Reasons Navigation ← Previous "Sheri Holland #10" Next → "Bryce Walker #12" Clay is the subject of Tape 6, Side A, however Hannah makes it clear that he is not one of the reasons for why she killed herself. He was the only one she was actually fond of, and while everyone else was on her hit list, she just wanted him to be on the tape because he was/is a part of her story. Clay spends the night with Tony, listening to his tape. On the night of Jessica's party, Clay and Hannah walk upstairs because of the large crowd. Hannah asks Clay if he wants to go to Jessica's room, and he says yes. The two start talking and making jokes about Jessica's rock collection. Clay then leans over and kisses Hannah. Hannah seems shocked but she kisses him back. Then the two were about to have sex before Hannah starts remembering all the guys that did her wrong, and suddenly she can't escape from thinking everyone is against her. She has a mental breakdown and then tells him to stop, which he does before asking what's wrong. She yells at him to go away, which he does. On the tape, Hannah says a part of her was begging him to stay while she was yelling at him to leave. Clay is the only person on the tapes who did nothing wrong but he was included as a part of her story. In the beginning of the first episode, Justin tells him he isn't as innocent as she says he is. Justin seemed to be talking about the fact that on the tapes, Hannah says Clay shouldn't be on the tapes, because in her eyes, he just should've stayed. Though it is possible that Justin is simply angry that Clay is not guilty of doing horrible things like he and the others on Hannah's list are and potentially cannot be punished or arrested for any part in Hannah's death. In spite of Hannah telling him that he is not a part of her list, Clay is devastated by the fact that he left Hannah when she desperately needed him, claiming he did it because he was scared, not because Hannah told him to go and claims that this was the beginning of the chain of unfortunate events that followed such as Jessica's rape and Jeff's death as a result of Sheri and claims that he is responsible for Hannah's death and breaks down over the fact that he never told Hannah that he loved her. He later declares himself to be "Number 11" when confronting Mr. Porter. Personality “ Clay, Helmet, your name does not belong on this list. But you need to be here if I'm going to tell my story. If I'm going to explain why I did what I did. Because you aren't every other guy. You're different. You're good and kind and decent. And I didn't deserve to be with someone like you. ” — Hannah describing Clay on her tape about him.[src] Clay is shown to be a somewhat socially awkward person, however, he is an overall very caring, intelligent and honest person who is a good friend to those around him and a decent person. He was shown to have had a crush on Hannah Baker though was never able to tell her directly that he loved her. While he treated Hannah well and had a good friendship with her, he himself mistreated her on a few occasions such as hurting her feelings after seeing the photograph that Justin took of her that was spread around the school and coldly telling her off after she tried talking to him about Jeff's death. Clay's eventual coldness towards her was apparently so great that during her meeting with Mr. Porter, Hannah claimed that she thought Clay hated her. In spite of this, Clay is shown to be devastated by Hannah's death and when he is given her tapes, he is shown to be horrified upon learning of the reasons why she killed herself. He becomes disgusted at the actions of the people on her list, and develops a strong hatred for some of them, notably Justin, Tyler and Bryce. He slowly begins to become more and more "unstable", hallucinating things such as punching Zach or Hannah's dead body covered in blood in the middle of the basketball court. Clay's hallucinations also show events that haven't actually happened, such as in Tape 1, Side A, in which Clay hallucinates the kiss between Hannah and Justin turn into something more based on the rumor that Hannah is a "Slut" and in Tape 3, Side A, in which Clay hallucinates a scenario in which he dances with Hannah at the Winter Formal but is stopped once Hannah's wrist begin to bleed which is a symbol of her suicide. This is likely due to survivor's guilt a symptom of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), as a result of listening to the tapes and learning the truth. Throughout listening to the tapes, Clay becomes notably colder and also becomes angered at any sign of disrespect towards Hannah, notably seen when he gets angered at his old friend Skye for calling Hannah a coward. Clay even becomes a bully towards Tyler, Courtney and Zach to get revenge, after learning of their actions that led to Hannah's suicide: He deliberately took a picture of Tyler Down naked and spread it around the school because Tyler took a photo of Hannah and Courtney Crimsen kissing and spread it around school.[18] He brought Courtney to Hannah's grave in an attempt to hurt her because she lied to Montgomery de la Cruz about sexual things Hannah did and had done to her, which hurt Hannah and added to the "Hannah the Slut" rumors.[19] He keyed Zach's car with the words "Why me?", the same words Hannah asked Zach on the tapes after he stole compliments out of her bag that were the only thing making her happy at a lonely time in her life.[20] He does, however, appreciate those who actually feel remorse for their actions towards Hannah, notably Alex and Tony and later Jessica and Sheri when she takes responsibly for her actions. However he is strongly disgusted that a majority of the people on Hannah's list choose to hide Bryce's crimes and Jessica's rape, and even becomes aggressive towards his best friend Tony. At one point (after he and Zach catch Hannah in a brief lie on the tapes) he briefly even considers abandoning the tapes and going about things normally however he completely snaps in front of new foreign exchange students and shows his disgust at the people who treated Hannah like shit and the school itself for trying to remove responsibly from itself and vows that no matter what, the truth about Hannah's death and all those responsible will come out. Even though the others on Hannah's last attempt to sabotage him and try and intimidate him into keeping quiet, Clay refuses
