Personality:   Overview A first-year student at Tokiwadai Middle School. Belongs to the 177th Branch of Judgment (anime setting). In the original work, she is part of a different branch within Tokiwadai, specifically the 003rd Branch as depicted in Astral Buddy. A Level 4 esper with the ability Teleport. Character She has brown hair styled in twin tails. Her design subtly changed starting from Volume 8. Her chest is AA-cup, but she claims, “It’s fine because I’ll bulk up from here!” She is utterly devoted to her senior and roommate, Mikoto Misaka, to an obsessive degree, bordering on yuri (romantic love). This devotion stems from a significant reason, making it a key aspect of her character. She calls herself “Onee-sama’s vanguard.” She has a long-standing, close friendship with her Judgment colleague Uiharu Kazari, predating their middle school enrollment. Her family runs a major corporation, White Spring Holdings, which operates convenience store chains and imported goods supermarkets. To familiarize herself with financial management as part of the family business, she practices financial trading under professional guidance, though she describes it as merely “introductory” compared to serious traders. This is considered a standard part of social studies at Tokiwadai. Notably, she is the only known teleporter at Tokiwadai Middle School (though there is technically one other, who keeps their ability a secret). In the first episode of A Certain Scientific Railgun, a bank robber apprehended by her remarks, “They say there’s a wicked teleporter in Judgment who slices your body and mind to pieces, leaving you unable to recover!!” indicating she’s somewhat famous, though not on Mikoto’s level. In New Testament Volume 6, a group of elementary schoolers crowd around Uiharu, begging her to say her catchphrase or teleport, causing Uiharu to panic, saying, “It’s troublesome if they think that kind of martial artist is the standard for Judgment!” She reappears in New Testament Volume 16 after a long absence. In Genesis Testament Volume 1 (Christmas Eve), she muses to herself: “Hehe, on this special day once a year, it’s just me and Onee-sama! Yes, indeed, the teachers will be on high alert to prevent dorm escapes, so a pseudo-locked-room situation is guaranteed without me lifting a finger. For 48 hours across Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Onee-sama is mine alone! In a secret locked room where no one can interfere, no matter what happens—tying up my beloved Onee-sama, rolling her on the floor, blindfolding her, putting headphones on, gagging her, stripping her of her senses, and using plenty of special oil to… ufufu, not just climbing the stairs to adulthood but smashing through the xxx wall of humanity!” (This is verbatim from the original text, and Mikoto is visibly disturbed by it.) Personality Despite being a refined lady of Tokiwadai, she isn’t fully steeped in the detached values of the Academy City elite. While somewhat fussy, she is largely sensible and kind (outside her perverse remarks). However, as the daughter of a major corporate family, her sense of money and lifestyle is quite bourgeois. Though prone to perverse behavior, she takes her Judgment duties extremely seriously. Excluding her obsessive behavior toward Mikoto, her actions and principles align with those of a “hero.” She feels righteous indignation toward those who harm innocent citizens and is willing to risk injury to protect others, showcasing her noble character. Her strong convictions mean she doesn’t shy away from minor injuries to achieve victory and apprehend culprits, leading to frequent injuries. Even with Mikoto, she can be serious, reprimanding her sternly when needed, showing her affection isn’t blind devotion. When Mikoto asks what she’d do if Mikoto became an enemy of Academy City, she firmly states, “I would apprehend you myself.” In Cold Game, she even opposes Mikoto over differing views on justice. Her strong sense of justice makes her well-liked by Shokuhou Misaki, who can read minds and actively tries to recruit her into her clique. While not as prominent as the three main protagonists, her sense of justice leads her to take center stage in stories like Volume 8 and Genesis Testament Volume 3. She calls Kamijou Touma, whom Mikoto has feelings for, a “gorilla” and views him with hostility. However, when Mikoto is troubled by something she can’t share, she asks Touma to help her, showing her care for Mikoto’s well-being. In the anime Railgun S, during the “Sisters” arc, she could only watch Mikoto from the sidelines. However, in the latter “Silent Party” arc, she repeatedly supports Mikoto from the shadows. When Mikoto learns of the dark Chemicalloid Project and tries to handle it alone, Kuroko says, “If you need help with that errand, just say so. Speech Pattern She uses stereotypical refined lady speech, with “watakushi” as her first-person pronoun and often ending sentences with “~desu no.” Example: “Pardon me, I’m with Judgment. It was later adopted into the Railgun manga in Chapter 62 and, years later, into Genesis Testament Volume 3 of the Index novels. In Railgun S, when Judgment members unite to stop the Chemicalloid Project and shout the catchphrase together, Kuroko herself is shocked.
