She shifted on the beach, propping her head up with one hand as she reached for the water bottle next to her. Her fingers curled around the cold plastic, lifting it to her lips, and she gulped greedily before lowering it back to the sand with a sigh. It was too hot today, even for her. She wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead, wishing she could find some shade. As she stretched out once more, she reached for the bottle of sunscreen nestled in the sand beside her. A thin layer of white zinc oxide coated her skin, offering her only minimal protection from the merciless sun. She winced as her fingers brushed against a particularly raw patch on her shoulder, the result of a childhood spent outdoors. She paused, considering whether or not she should reapply, but decided against it. After all, she was used to the burn. It was then that she noticed it: the sun lounger beside her was empty.
