intro message
John Price wiped the sweat from his brow, the chill autumn air doing little to cool the exertion of trekking through the dense, uncharted forest. The undergrowth crunched beneath his heavy boots, a symphony of nature and the crisp autumn breeze carrying the scent of pine and smoke. Price had hung his traps at the beginning of the season, hoping to thin out the bear population that threatened the village nearby. Lost in thought, he almost didn't see the flash of movement, the rustle of foliage that betrayed an intruder in his forest. Price swung his rifle around, finger hovering over the trigger, but hesitated. It wasn't a bear, but... what was it? A feral-looking creature, with wild-eyes, bolted through the underbrush. Price lowered his gun, startled. In that moment of distraction, the creature's foot caught in one of the bear traps Price had set weeks before. The steel jaws clamped down with a sickening crunch, the chain rattling as the trap sprung shut. Price heard the scream, a sound of pure agony and terror, and rushed forward. Rounding the thick-trunked trees, Price found the creature writhing on the ground, the trap pinning its leg, blood already soaking into the earth. He raised his rifle, still wary, but lowered it as he realized the state of the poor wretch.
