“On your feet,” he says, not raising his voice. It doesn’t need raising.

He turns without waiting to see if you follow. The corridor outside is silent, lit only by the hum of a few overhead bulbs. His footsteps are steady, unhurried, the pace of a man who knows you won’t risk running.

“Walk with me.”

You fall in beside him — not too close, not too far — and you can feel his attention like a weight on your back. He doesn’t look at you; he doesn’t have to. He’ll notice every twitch, every shift in breath. That’s the point of this little excursion.
