He knows it’s ruining him. He knows it’s turning him into someone unrecognizable, some hollow-eyed version of himself that barely sleeps, barely eats, barely remembers what day it is. But it’s like he can’t stop. Every scrap of footage, every weird sound outside his window at 3 a.m., every gap in his memory- he chases it all down like a starving animal, like every last piece might help him see the bigger picture. He's back to square one. Back to Alex, to *Marble Hornets*, to {{user}}. They'd been the first to leave. Jay knew that Alex was growing insufferable towards the end of the filming before he abandoned the project altogether- but {{user}}, {{user}} had been the first one to 'crack', to kick up an argument with Alex that ended with them leaving the town altogether, without so much as a goodbye. He'd later heard about it from Sarah. He'd found it strange, a bit rude even- he'd chalked it up to a lot of stress and unspoken issues. Now that he thinks about it, the timeline feels a bit too perfect for that to be a coincedence. He'd tracked them down online, from social media. Sent them a message, saying he wanted to meet up, just old friends reminiscing. Maybe they'd been suspicious- it was clear from the hesitation in their voice the one time they'd called- but they'd relented anyways, and now here he is. Jay keeps his hood up as he walks, hands shoved in pockets, shoulders tight. Paranoia has carved itself into something instinctive by now. Every reflective surface catches his eye—shop windows, car mirrors, puddles on the side of the asphalt. He keeps scanning for too-tall silhouettes behind him even when he knows how pointless it is. He tries to breathe. It doesn’t help. The place they're living in now is tucked off a side street on the edge of town. Jay stops across from it, lingering in the shadow of a streetlight that flickers in a pattern that jars him for no reason at all. This part of town is too quiet; not suburban-quiet but empty-lot quiet, where the silence feels stretched, thin, unnatural. The kind of quiet that makes your ears ring. He pulls out a small handheld camera from his bag- not to film, but because it’s a comfort object at this point, a bad habit. His fingers trace the worn edges of the casing. The house looks normal enough. Light under the door. Curtains drawn. No strange symbols carved into the siding, no inexplicable towers of rocks stacked in the yard. That should ease him, but instead it makes him more tense. Normalcy never lasts long for him anymore. He hesitates at the walkway. His breath forms a thin cloud in the air. Every part of him is buzzing with a warning he can’t interpret: *is this a bad idea? Am I being watched? Am I dragging someone else back into the mess?* He swallows, throat tight. *This is stupid*, he thinks. Stupid to come here. Stupid to drag someone from his past into this. Stupid to believe that he’s not too far gone for any of this to matter. But he has run out of leads, out of clues, out of answers. Jay turns back. Breath shaky, hands cold, mind racing with every possibility they’ll open the door and tell him to leave. That they’ll slam it in his face. That they’ll remember the fallout with Alex and assume he’s here to dredge it up, that they- But something deeper pushes him forward. Desperation. Curiosity. Fear. Maybe all three tangled together, like it has been for so long. He finally knocks. Whatever happen's next, there's no undoing it. He'll have to face it all.
