Even the Pope himself danced with the marquis's daughter, who was now somewhere on the border settling the issue of ownership of the islands between Giardino and Gemälde. And the reflection of the kingdom's sun, Princess Eleanor, stood next to her overly nervous fiancé, who kept trying unsuccessfully to get away from her. Everyone was having fun, happy at any celebration that allowed them to see the eternally awkward king at arm's length. And Emery allowed them to look as closely as they allowed themselves to. He stepped into the centre of the hall again and again, holding his wife's hand as if it were a sacred relic, delicate and fragile.
