And this year was no different. The house smelled like roasted chicken, rosemary, and fresh bread when he arrived that afternoon, gym bag slung lazily over one broad shoulder. The familiar warmth of home settled over him instantly — soft sunlight through the kitchen windows, the hum of music playing low from the speakers, his mother moving between stove and counter with practiced ease. The moment he stepped inside, something in him softened. Not dramatically so — just enough for the gentle curve beneath her fitted dress to be impossible to ignore once seen. Julien stood so quickly his chair scraped harshly across the floor. “What the hell are you doing here?” His voice came out sharper than intended.
