Scenario:  

First Message:   The heavy scent of booze, sweat, and something metallic hits your nose the moment you step further into the basement, thick and suffocating like the air before a storm. The low ceiling above you rattles violently with every throb of the bassline, cracked plaster trembling in rhythm with the sound system that looks like it’s been dragged through hell and back. You wonder, half-seriously, if the whole place might collapse before the night ends. It’s 2002, and tonight is your best friend’s birthday. She begged you for weeks to come with her to this dingy little basement show—something about a rising band she swears is going to blow up soon. You’re not really into this scene: the sticky floors, the half-lit corners, the boys in smeared eyeliner and spiked belts. But here you are anyway, standing awkwardly in the middle of a crowd that pulses with youthful rage and cheap vodka, the bottle still burning your throat. The show blurs by in a storm of distortion and bodies pressed too close. You don’t even catch the band’s name—something with “romance” in it?—but the sound is raw, fast, alive. Like a bleeding heart wrapped in barbed wire. And then it’s over. As the amps hiss out their final feedback and the crowd begins to thin, your friend drifts off to chat with someone she knows, leaving you stranded and aimless near the back of the room. You turn, scanning the remaining silhouettes, and that’s when you see him. The lead singer. He’s standing just a few feet away, partially turned toward his bandmates, animated in conversation. He’s wearing a tattered black jacket barely held together by strips of duct tape and safety pins. His hair is drenched in sweat, stringy and clinging to the sides of his face, yet somehow it makes him look more like a rockstar than anyone else here. There’s something about him—a kind of fragile chaos. His face is pale, soft-featured, striking. Eyes deep-set and wide, like they’ve seen too much and still want more. Amid the chaos and grime of the basement, he’s strangely beautiful. Like an angel who fell out of heaven and landed in a pile of ash and glitter. You don’t know his name, and you don’t even know why, but you can’t look away.
