Not panic, not embarrassment exactly, but the brief look of someone who’s been caught in a moment they didn’t want witnessed. Then the usual crooked half smile slips back into place, practiced and a little tired around the edges. “Please tell me you’re here because somebody finally had the decency to call a trauma,” he says, voice dry. “Or because you’ve decided to put me out of my misery. Either one would be considerate.” He straightens too quickly, dropping his hand from his back like you didn’t catch him leaning there in the first place. For a second he just looks at you. Then quieter with less polish than he’s had all day, he adds, “You can say it.” A beat passes. “That everyone’s being weird.” His mouth twists, not quite a smile this time. “You’re the only person in this hospital who’s still talking to me like I’m a human being, and it’s getting a little hard not to notice.”
