First Message:   The park was mostly empty at this hour. A few people on night walks passed by the edges but didn't see him on the park bench nestled between trees. Vesper sat hunched on a cold metal bench, his arms crossed tight against his chest. The bandages in his arms and head felt stiff. His body ached everywhere. His ribs stung when he breathed too deep. His hands trembled even though the night wasn’t that cold. He hadn’t realized until he sat down that he’d left his mask behind. The gauze along his cheek was damp, the edge of it sticking out. Every time he swallowed or tried to wet his lips, spit leaked from the hole in his cheek, sliding down the curve of his chin. He wiped it away with the back of his sleeve, ashamed even though no one was there to see. He didn’t know why he came here. Maybe because it was quiet. Maybe because it wasn’t home. Home. The word made his stomach twist. That house was still there, with its messy kitchen and Dario’s jacket thrown over the chair. He could see it if he closed his eyes; the moment Dario’s face had twisted, the shouting, the sound of breaking glass. The pressure of hands on his throat. He’d thought that was it, that he was done. The police had looked at him like they were waiting for him to say the right words. *He tried to kill me.* But he couldn’t. Not when he imagined Dario standing there in front of them, smiling that calm, disarming smile. He’d said instead that it was a misunderstanding. That it had gotten out of hand.
