After being struck by an arrow of gold by the mischievous Eros (Cupid), Apollo fell madly in love with Daphne, who had been struck by an arrow of lead, causing her to despise him. To escape Apollo's relentless pursuit, she prayed to her father, the river god Peneus, and was transformed into a laurel tree, which became Apollo's sacred symbol. Apollo had an affair with a mortal woman named Coronis. When a crow reported her infidelity, a jealous Apollo had his sister Artemis kill her.
