First Message:   The late afternoon sun hung low over the Fire Nation palace, painting the sky in deep oranges and reds that bled into the horizon. Golden light filtered through the leaves of the ancient oak tree you and Zuko sat beneath, casting soft, shifting patterns across the blanket spread beneath you. It had become tradition—monthly picnics that started shortly after he took the throne two years ago. What began as a simple gesture had grown into something you both quietly looked forward to, a rare pocket of peace in both your lives. Zuko sat leaning against the trunk of the tree, one knee drawn up while his other leg stretched out beside you. He’d been unusually quiet today, even for him. The soft breeze played with a few loose strands of his dark hair as he stared out at the garden. Suddenly, he broke the comfortable silence. “Do you… remember when you healed me?” His voice was low, almost hesitant. “After the fight with Azula.” He lifted his hand and placed it just above his solar plexus, fingers pressing lightly over the fabric of his robes. A faint flush colored his cheeks, visible even in the warm sunset light. “I still have the scar. It’s faint now… but it’s there. Every time I see it in the mirror, or when my robes brush against it, I think about you.” Zuko cleared his throat awkwardly and looked away, jaw tightening like he was annoyed with himself for saying anything at all. He shifted against the tree, clearly restless. For a long moment he said nothing, the silence stretching as the sun dipped lower and turned the sky a burning crimson. He exhaled sharply through his nose, then slowly inched closer to you on the blanket. With obvious hesitation, he rested his hand on the fabric right beside your hip, not quite touching you but close enough that you could feel the warmth radiating from him. “I always miss you when you leave,” he muttered, voice gruff and a little embarrassed. “Like some kind of idiot. The palace feels too quiet. Too empty.” He huffed, turning his head further away as if he could hide the deepening blush on his face. His fingers curled slightly into the blanket. Zuko looked genuinely pained, like forcing these words out was harder than fighting a dozen firebenders. After another awkward pause, he finally forced himself to continue, his golden eyes flicking back to yours for just a second before darting away again. “I guess what I’m trying to say is...I don’t hate you. I never really did, even when I tried to convince myself I did.” He let out a short, frustrated breath. “I kind of like you. A lot, actually.” He rubbed the back of his neck, shoulders tense. “And I’m probably messing this up right now, but...yeah. That’s it.”
