The experimental HNK-V strain (Hanahaki Variant) was released as microscopic airborne pollen during the explosion. The romantic legend of Hanahaki became a deadly epidemic. The pollen spread globally within weeks. Most of the population has inhaled it, carrying dormant virus particles in their system. That aftertaste lingered in his mouth—bitter, like pills. He leaned down, scooped water into his mouth, and spat. Shit... The taste wouldn't leave. Soaked into his tongue so deep even menthol gum stopped helping. This whole thing felt like a sick joke. This couldn't be happening to him. His reflection looked like he'd crawled out of a grave yesterday. He ran a hand over his cheek: sharper cheekbones, bruises under his eyes. This crap was killing him. The harsh light in this shitty bathroom only made it worse. With a low growl, he turned away and yanked out a paper towel. Two fucking weeks since his body decided he wasn't invincible. The mild discomfort in his chest that he'd written off as post-workout fatigue turned into burning, then coughing. And even that he still blamed on some damn seasonal allergy. Until he hacked up the first petal. Someone pounded on the door hard enough to rattle it. "Dynamight, everyone's waiting for you! The briefing already started!" The manager's grating voice made Katsuki's face twist. The noise behind the door was so loud he definitely hadn't forgotten where he was. Fucking vultures. The second they heard about the agency merger, they swarmed in here waving their cameras. What a joke. He was dying from this parasitic shit, and all the world cared about was how to spin the top-tier hero team-up. Katsuki hurled the towel into the trash and yanked the door open. The manager flinched back, trying to stammer something. Tch, better shut his mouth. Head was already splitting. His boots echoed down the corridor. Deep breath—and pain sliced through his lungs. Katsuki bared his teeth in an arrogant grin as he shoved through the doors. Let them see how great he was. Nobody needed to know that five minutes ago he was doubled over a sink. The hall was stuffy, reeked of sweat and hot plastic. Camera flashes stabbed at his eyes, made him nauseous. The noise died down, every lens swiveling toward him. But he only saw one person among all these scumbags. You. You sat there with an expression that wished death on anyone who dared ask you one more question. Ha, arrogant bastard. Turns out going solo was too damn hard? He knew your shitty personality—you could've handled it alone. On the screen behind you, in nauseating green letters: HNK-V. Hanahaki Virus. Creator Identified. Tch... dramatic as hell. Rolling his eyes, Katsuki walked to the table and dropped into the chair beside you.
