  • Scenario:   Thousands of years ago from today, humans somehow reached Africa and spread from there to all parts of the world. The groups that spread everywhere developed their customs and traditions differently from other human groups due to geography and other factors as well. Especially between 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, with the melting of ice and the availability of more food sources for humans, people began to multiply very rapidly. With the transition to the Neolithic Age, in which people began to plant and harvest, people started to have more time for development. So instead of men going out for hunting, they planted, completed their work, discovered new things, and then harvested. With the beginning of agriculture by the inhabitants of Mesopotamia, they also began to transition to a settled life and started to establish cities. This is how the oldest civilization in history was founded, which was established between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and extended to the Arabian Gulf. This civilization is the Sumerian civilization. Farming in these lands was not easy because these areas consisted of marshes or swamps. The summer, of course, was very hot in Iraq, and everywhere was desert except near the riverbanks. The Sumerians were forced to form and organize themselves into groups around these rivers in order to ensure the survival of their lineage and leave a safe area for their children. The human need for one another and the necessity of cooperation among themselves led to a change in the way of thinking of this group of people who, until recently, had lived in caves and hunted animals. With the beginning of agriculture, people began living in houses, raising animals, eating regularly, which developed them further. They began producing pottery and other arts. With the increase in products like pottery and textiles, this led to the beginning of trade in the form of barter for the first time. Also, during this same period, religious beliefs evolved and changed significantly. Between 5000 and 5500 BCE, the Sumerians began founding the first large cities, and the features of civilization started to become clearer in Mesopotamia. But the Sumerians were not the first to establish civilization. Rather, they came from outside, and there was another group of native inhabitants in the region. The Sumerians came, were influenced by them, and developed further, building upon that civilization. No one knows the true name of these earlier people, but because their remains were discovered in Tell al-‘Ubaid, their period was called the Ubaid period, and their people the Ubaidians. These Ubaidians were not highly developed, but they planted and harvested — meaning they had laid the groundwork for the Sumerians. The Sumerians migrated to the region around 4000 BCE. There are many theories about the origin of the Sumerians: some say they were from Shem and migrated from the deserts west of Mesopotamia; some say they were from Japheth, son of Noah, and came from Central Asia; others say they were also from Japheth but migrated from the north, i.e., from Anatolia and the Caucasus. But regardless of their exact origin, their arrival to the region significantly developed it, and at the same time, led to the development of humanity. Cities like Kish, Nippur, Zabala, Umma, Lagash, Eridu, Uruk, and Ur were established. These cities, along with trade and agriculture, developed significantly. These cities were called "city" or something similar, and from here the English word "city" originated. And if we take the possibility that the Sumerians were from Japheth son of Noah, then they are relatives of the Germanic peoples, so maybe the word "city" was shared between them, or that the Germanic peoples took this word from the Sumerian language. These small cities transformed from city-like states—each with its own king and managed like independent countries—but in the end, they all remained Sumerian. The most developed city at that time was Uruk, and that’s why historians refer to that period as the Uruk period. Specifically, in the period around 3200 BCE, the rulers of the cities, to facilitate trade and increase transactions, invented something new—and that was cuneiform writing. The Sumerians, who were among the discoverers of writing, were also the ones who discovered communication between states, or "companies," which at that time were the temples where people's wealth was stored. And people’s wealth during that period was their agricultural produce. So everything was just beginning in that era—and nearly everything began with the Sumerians—except for the invention of money, which came later with the Medes. The official discourse continued to evolve until it reached our time. There were priest-kings known as "ensi," who claimed they ruled the state in the name of the god. And according to Sumerian mythology and legends, the gods before the flood that happened assigned the task of founding the first kingdom on Earth to the rulers of the city of Eridu. The Sumerians were ruled by kings from Eridu, but after that came the flood. After the flood, the first records that appeared in the Sumerian lands were during the reign of King Etana, who was the king of Kish. Specifically, this was around 2900 BCE. This king was known as the shepherd who rose to heaven and united the world under his rule. During his reign, Mesopotamia was in complete peace and the people lived in wealth and prosperity. But the first king whose existence is confirmed and who indeed ruled these lands was King Enmebaragesi, king of the 22nd Kish dynasty, who followed an expansionist policy. First, he attacked the Elamites, and when the Elamites tried to stop the attack, the first recorded battle in history occurred. In this battle, believed to have happened around 2700 BCE, the Sumerians defeated the Elamites. Also, during that same period, the priest of the Inanna or Ishtar temple, or the priest Meshkiangasher, who claimed to be the son of the sun god Utu, declared his rebellion. His son Enmerkar continued the rebellion and re-established the city of Uruk around the temple of Ishtar. The ruling dynasty of Uruk quickly took control of nearby cities and became rivals to the city of Kish. It is known that King Enmerkar launched a campaign on the city of Aratta, which was rich in valuable metals. This city was located near the Caspian Sea, but it has not yet been discovered to this day. This campaign shows us the extent of the power of the Sumerian army and the places it was able to reach. After Enmerkar, came Lugulbanda, Dumuzid the Fisherman, and Gilgamesh—these kings were important both historically and mythologically. During the reign of Gilgamesh, the dominance of Kish over the Sumerians was broken. Another ruling dynasty emerged under Mesannepada in Ur. Thus, Sumerian lands became divided among three ruling families: Uruk, Kish, and Ur. These three families fought each other for many years to reunite the state, but this division greatly weakened the Sumerians. This weakness led to an attack by the kingdom of Awan, which took control of Sumerian lands. But the kings of Kish gathered their forces and expelled the Awanians from their territories. However, after that, the kingdom of Hamazi attacked and took over Mesopotamia. The Hamazians were expelled by the kings of Uruk, who then unified the state. But they could not secure all the Sumerian cities, and problems continued between these cities, which were called "cities." The three major cities—Ur, Uruk, and Lagash—continued to fight each other. They would finish one battle only to enter another. Thus, conflicts lasted for many years. Eventually, Lugalannemundu, ruler of the city of Adab, strengthened himself greatly during this turbulent phase. He was a king respected and feared by all nations and a spreader of peace among them. He built the greatest and best temples for the gods and restored the power of the Sumerian kingdom once more. He managed to subdue all thirteen cities that opposed him and imposed his authority from the Zagros Mountains to the Arabian Gulf. He launched military campaigns on the Elamites and the Gutians, but his death shattered the state again. The Sumerian cities returned to managing themselves independently. The ensi, or city kings, although they sometimes controlled other cities briefly, could not unite under one king or establish a central state in the region. Cities always fought each other with full force, and these wars were extinguishing the Sumerians’ brilliance. There were also dozens of other cities in the Sumerian kingdom besides the ones I mentioned, but unfortunately, there isn’t much information about them, and they are rarely mentioned. That’s what makes it hard for us to compile and summarize the wars that were going on at the time.
