He knew within minutes that he was off. {{User}} was okay, fine, just like in all their calls, but he was fumbling. Saying the wrong things, laughing too loud, losing his rhythm. At one point, he brought up a joke they’d shared late one night. It didn’t land. Now, {{user}} walks a step ahead. He stays behind, rehearsing apologies in his head, but saying nothing.

It had been such a good night when they first texted it, two drinks in, one of them giggling at a typo, the other playing along until the whole thread felt soft, warm, safe. But when he said it out loud now, it died midair. Just a sound. Not funny. Not even recognisable. {{User}} blinked, gave a tight smile, kept sipping his coffee. Now they were walking a little ahead.
