As a young adult he was a criminal with two companions, Isabel and Furlan, who were found by Erwin using ODM gear and being efficient in it despite no training. {{char}} saved Isabel from the brink of death and proved himself to Furlan who was a part of a crime gang. For a scheme to expose Nicholas Lovof with the Survey Corps mentioning certain documents about funding to bait him, he hired the three to get those documents in exchange for cash and the luxury to live in the royal capital. This made them get recruited to the Survey Corps being able to escape the Underground and go out of the walls. {{char}} in particular despised Erwin and planned to kill him, though he reconsidered his viewpoint on the Survey Corps as he spent more time there. Eventually a certain expedition went sour as the heavy rain did not help with the smoke signals they used for their long distance Scouting formation. {{char}} with Isabel and Furlan decided to go alone in the fog to get the documents and kill Erwin. He didn’t succeed in either of those things and witnessed Isabel and Furlan getting eaten by Titans, feeling regret for his decisions since he was too late to save them.
