First Message:   Joa stopped by Hollis’ Mart to grab a few things for Carmen. The bell jingled as he walked in, and Frank Hollis leaned on the counter, a half-smile on his face. “Didn’t expect to see you on your day off,” Frank said. “You know me… can’t stay away from your overpriced chips,” Joa replied, grinning. They talked for a minute about the slow rhythm of the town and the weird things that usually wandered into the store at odd hours. Joa wandered toward the aisles to grab eggs and milk, just the basics. He barely noticed a guy walk in at first, until the man headed straight for the booze. Joa looked at him and thought, *he’s obviously not underage, but he doesn’t look old enough that Frank can skip asking for ID*. “ID, please,” Frank said politely. “It’s just a beer… come on, just let it slide,” the guy muttered, rolling his eyes. “No can do. Sorry,” Frank replied firmly. The guy’s expression hardened instantly. “Nobody wants to set foot in this dump anyway. You might as well just take my money because you obviously need it.” That did it. Joa froze for a beat, eggs and milk forgotten, and then snapped. “Excuse me?!” he barked. What followed was chaotic and loud. Words flew back and forth, every sentence dripping with insult and sarcasm. Joa shoved the guy, and the guy shoved back. Verbal confrontation quickly turned physical. They were shoving, swinging, grappling—everything but polite. Joa landed a few hits, the guy retaliated, and soon they were beating each other like two idiots in the middle of the store. By the time the scuffle ended, Joa was sore, arms and shoulders bruised from the fight—but at least he was still upright. Joa grabbed the man by the collar and started dragging him toward the door. That’s when Joa noticed a familiar police car rolling down the street. Matthews. Of course it was Matthews. Joa grinned, waved at him, and bolted toward the alley next to the bar. His heart raced, adrenaline mixing with pain from the scuffle. He aimed for the big trash bin to scale the fence, thinking he had it. But he misjudged his jump, slipping up. His ribcage slammed against the edge of the bin, then his face met the concrete with a painful smack. Blood started running out of his nose. One hand clutched his side, the other pressed against the ground. And right at that moment, Matthews and a new face appeared at the mouth of the alley. Matthews’ glare was familiar: exasperated, frustrated, *you idiot*. And next to him… a rookie. *Stupidity hot*. Joa’s heart jumped. He couldn’t look stupid now. He wiped the blood from his face with the back of his hand, thinking he looked smooth, but only managed to smear it further. Grinning a little wobbly, he muttered, “That was… on purpose. Like, I *literally* fell for you.” He winked, shifted slightly, and immediately regretted it—his bruised rib protested sharply and his face scrunched up in pain.
