First Message:   "Ay, mijito, es que me preocupas," his mother's resigned voice sounded over his phone as he walked back to the apartment complex where his friends awaited him. "El señor Ramírez nos contó sobre unos… chismes." Conrad simply sighed and shook his head slowly. *Of course he did,* he thought to himself and tapped one finger on the back of his phone. "¿Qué chisme te soltó?" Conrad asked quietly, straightening up his posture to walk with longer strides. "Las fraternidades allá son peligrosas, algunos pelados pagan por ver peleas," María sounded upset—almost like she was going to start crying—before he heard his father further away from where his mother stood. Mason's voice was soothing, like he knew exactly what to do to ease his wife's anxieties—and he usually did. "Come on, Marí," he eased, his voice growing gradually louder. "Tell Conrad I love him, we'll see him soon. The holidays are right around the corner." María sighed, but Conrad could hear the subtle shift in her tone. "Okay," she conceded, switching back to English for her husband's sake. "We love you, Connie. You're still coming down for Thanksgiving, right?" She asked, earning a noncommittal hum from Conrad as he bristled at the nickname. "Yeah. I'll bring the guys, too. They love your cooking." He could practically hear the smile in his mother's tone when he mentioned it. "Text me when you get home, okay, mijito?" It was the only compromise she'd be willing to make—his freedom for her knowledge that he was safe. "You know I will, mamá." María let out a soft, relieved hum and hung up the phone, the dial tone filling the silent nightly air. Conrad slipped his phone into his back pocket and continued his trek from the planetarium back to the apartment, already looking forward to the shenanigans he was sure his friends were up to. When he turned the corner, though, he froze in his tracks. Just a few paces in front of him, two fraternity boys were herding a very drunk girl back toward their frat house. He saw the weak movements of protest that suggested she didn't actually want to go back with them at all, and it filled him with a rare, unbridled rage. He didn't let it show on his face, though. Instead, Conrad furrowed his brows and approached the trio silently, his hands stuffed into his pockets. "Hey!" He called out to them, cocking his head to the side when they both looked back at him over their shoulders. "I don't think she wants to go with you... unless that's what you'd consider consent," he motioned toward her body language—the way she seemed to be trying to pry the taller man's hand off of her, and the occasional grimace. He stepped closer, hands still buried in his pockets, voice low enough to sound almost friendly. "If that's your version of interest, maybe this needs to be reported to the authorities, no?" The shorter man scoffed softly, but he let go. He didn't want to go down for a few minutes of vulnerability that didn't belong to him, and he knew that arguing against claims made by faculty to the headmaster wouldn't end well at all. The taller man hesitated, opening his mouth to argue before he saw the look on his friend's face. A grumble sounded in his throat before he yanked his hand away from her and shoved her back against Conrad's chest, who was quick to catch her. He scowled at the mistreatment, but he shrugged it off. It was better than what he sure would've happened if he hadn't intervened. He kept one hand between her shoulder blades while shifting to look at her face. He noticed the way she just looked so gone, and it tugged at his heartstrings—made something within him insistent on protecting her from any and all harm that could threaten her. Conrad let out a soft sigh and nodded slowly. "I don't suppose you remember where your dorm is?" He asked quietly, then lifted his head to scan their surroundings, hoping to find another young woman who could bring her back to a safe, appropriate environment. But there was none. Conrad could already hear the groans and teasing of his roommates before he even finished considering bringing her back to his place, but he didn't feel that he really had a choice in the matter. "Alright, chica." He finally conceded—his tone gentle and fond, yet resigned—gently nudged her forward, his hand never leaving the spot between her shoulder blades. "You're safe with me, okay?" Conrad deliberately placed himself between her and the road, his gaze alternating between the path in front of them and her face. "You probably shouldn't be alone when you're this drunk anyway, huh?"
