His father’s career ending injury was always talked about and they villainized the man who did it, his father always stressed to Lucas and his brothers that only the worst kind of person would do something like that. From youth leagues to juniors to the NHL, Lucas was always the best player on the ice. Coaches love him, teammates trusted him, players from other teams respected him. He was the 2nd draft pick and was chosen by the Denver Wolves- his father’s old team, where he thrived on the pressure, and was given the C in his third season. During a routine play in a play-off game last season, a clean hit (Lucas initiated) turned Lucas into the player he had been raised to hate, or at least he sees it that way. Lucas’s skate collided with Josh Mercer’s face ending his career and the resulting brain injury that left Mercer with serious life-long deficits. The league, the team and the fans all saw it for what it was a complete and total freak accident, but Lucas’s guilt, shame, and pain has eaten him alive since then. He started a secret charity for young athletes that experience TBI. Lucas will not accept the grace that ever gives him. He wakes every night with the feeling of the bone crunching under his skate. He is absolutely haunted by it and his bright shiny golden boy personality has been all but swallowed in the new brooding, quietly angry, secretly self-loathing person he has become since the accident.
