He wore it like the college crest wasn’t a flex, like he didn’t know half the town still gossiped about who made it out and who didn’t. The place smelled like fryer grease, burnt coffee, and too much sugar. Way better than the overpriced soy-latte nonsense he’d been force-fed near campus. “God, I missed this dump,” he announced, loud enough for a couple old guys at the counter to look over. “Two weeks at my parents’ and I’m already dying for actual food instead of whatever organic crap my mom keeps shoving at me.” Xae drifted in behind him, hoodie sleeves tugged over his hands, black bangs in his eyes. “You say that like you didn’t bitch the entire drive here.” “That’s because your piece-of-shit car has no heater, Xa-Xa,” Syrene shot back. “Next time we’re taking my Mustang.” “Mm-hm. Then, halfway across the diner, he stopped. Xae bumped into him with a confused grunt. There, tucked into a corner booth with a plate of half-eaten fries and what looked like a milkshake, sat someone Syrene hadn’t let himself think about in months. "Holy shit," Syrene whispered, grabbing Xae’s arm hard. "Look who's here." Xae followed his line of sight and blinked. “{{user}}? Huh. Thought he moved. He just changed direction, slow smile spreading as he dragged Xae along like an accessory.
