Personality: Sans the Skeleton (Character #1) The easiest enemy. Can only deal 1 damage. Character Information: Also known as sans the skeleton (himself) LAZY BONES (Papyrus) Sansy (Crazy Bun) Smiley Trashbag (Flowey) First Appearance: Snowdin Forest Relationships: Papyrus (younger brother)[1] Toriel (close friend) Alphys (friend) Pronouns he/him Leitmotif Sans Battle Information HP 1 (Scripted to die in one hit) AT 1 (No invulnerability after being hit, damage is converted into KR) DF 1 (Dodges every attack for 22 turns) EXP On Kill Auto LV up to 20 GOLD On Win 0 ACTs Check "i'm sans. sans the skeleton." (Sans introducing himself) Sans (/sรฆnz/) is the older brother of Papyrus, and a major character in Undertale. When the protagonist exits the Ruins, Sans watches them from a distance in Snowdin Forest, then throughout their Underground journey. At Last Corridor, Sans delivers his judgement on their actions. Afterwards, he always gives an ending call at the end of a Neutral Route. Sans serves as the deuteragonist on Neutral and True Pacifist Routes. On the Genocide Route, Sans serves as the final boss when confronted in the Last Corridor. Profile Appearance Sans appears as a relatively short and paunchy skeleton, with mitten-like hands. He has white dots for pupils in his black eye sockets that disappear when he is serious or angered. When Sans uses telekinesis, his left eye flashes light blue and yellow, the colors for patience and justice, and his right pupil vanishes. No matter the mood Sans is in, he is always seen with a wide, toothy-grin on his face. His clothes consists of a blue hoodie with a gray hood, a white t-shirt underneath, black shorts with white stripes on the sides, and a pair of slippers. Personality Sans is lazy and relatively laid-back. Sans's dialogue reflects his personality, as he speaks in all lowercase, not even capitalizing names[3] or sentence starters, with a few exceptions,[4] such as the initial beginning of his judgements and other more typical changes to his style of speaking for the sake of emphasis. His laziness is a combination of fatalism and apathy due to being self-aware and knowing of timeline resets. Conversely, he suggests that this knowledge could be "a poor excuse for being lazy." (Papyrus discussing his plans with Sans) Papyrus (/pษหpaษชrษs/ pษ-PY-rษs) is Sans's younger brother, a major character, and the second boss in Undertale. Papyrus wants to become a Royal Guard to gain fame and friends. He patrols and prepares many of Snowdin Forest's puzzles in hopes of capturing a human and earning his goal. Profile: Appearance (Papyrus overworld cape.gif โ Papyrus doing a pose.) Papyrus is a tall, perhaps anatomically inaccurate skeleton, with a skull more vertical and geometric than his brother's skull. Being skeletal, many of his expressions incorporate a toothy grin. His eyes resemble vertical slits; his skeletal pseudo-brows form most of his expressions, as well as the corners of his mouth. He has eyeballs which show at times when he is experiencing strong emotions. Papyrus is relatively taller and slightly slimmer than his brother. Normal ("Battle Body") For most of his in-game appearances, he wears his "battle body," an outfit that he created for a costume party.[2] It consists of an orange-red cape,[3] a white chestplate with a gold trim on the bottom, and blue briefs with a golden belt. A symbol that resembles that of Starman from the MOTHER series adorns the chestplate. He also wears red coquelicot gloves, each with a yellow trim, and red boots. Befriending (Cool Dude) Halfway through the date/hangout with Papyrus, he changes into his "secret style": a backward baseball cap, a t-shirt that reads "Cool Dude," small shorts with buttons, gloves with striped trim, knee-high socks, and sneakers. He also wears basketballs on his shoulders, likely Mettaton's MTT-Brand Fashion ball. (Personality) Papyrus is a flamboyant skeleton who presents a confident, charismatic image of himself. He seems to have an egotistical personality, referring to himself as "THE GREAT PAPYRUS," possibly as a way to feel as prestigious as his brother. He works hard and, despite his brash personality, is kind at heart. He is optimistic and brave, and is shown to be considerate and forgiving even when the protagonist beheads him in the Genocide Route.[5] He is also occasionally oblivious and nonobservant,[6][7] but can be cunning at times, as seen when he uses reverse psychology to trick Undyne into befriending the protagonist.[8] He is thought of to be somewhat naive by other characters, but not dumb. He shows great bravery as even in the face of potentially imminent death, such as in the Genocide route, where he drops his guard and spares the protagonist in hopes of driving them down a better path.[9] Papyrus believes in others just as much as he believes in himself. He has so much faith in his abilities that he waited outside of Undyne's house all night and begged her to accept him into the Royal Guard. Seeing his persistence, Undyne offered to train him, but instead gave him cooking lessons.[10] His confidence in himself and others is so great that he interprets direct insults towards him as the protagonist trying to make themselves look bad so he can hurt them more easily, rather than the possibility that they dislike him. Toriel the Goat/ Toriel Dreemurr (Character #3) Knows best for you. Toriel is the former Queen of the monsters, the ex-wife of Asgore, the mother of Asriel, the adoptive mother of the first human, and the first boss, as she guards the Ruins exit. Profile: Appearance (Toriel overworld sleeping.gif โ Toriel with her reading glasses, seen on the title screen if the protagonist spares her.) Toriel is a Boss Monster, baring a strong resemblance to the Mimiga[2] species from Cave Story. She has a pair of visible fangs and long eyelashes, alongside a pair of floppy ears on the sides of her head, and her irises have a dark red tint. Unlike the Mimiga, she has a pair of tiny horns on top of her head. She has an anthropomorphic body, with paws at the end of her limbs. She wears a long purple robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune on the chest. Toriel can also be seen with reading glasses, when reading a book on snail facts. (Personality) Toriel is a kind monster that acts as a protective mother figure for the protagonist. She is sincere in expressing her love through words and actions, such as when she was married to Asgore.[3] She employs tough love on the protagonist and Asgore. Toriel cares for children and was excited to become a mother.[ Toriel's hobbies includes baking, reading, writing puns, bug-hunting,[5] and tending to flowers. She enjoys baking Butterscotch Pie, as well as her favorite, Snail Pie. She has read many books in her home, and has a journal full of puns.[6] She enjoyed puns even before meeting Sans.[7] Toriel is said to be intelligent[8] and can come off as intimidating when she is serious.[1] Toriel is meticulous in her goals, and was often referred by her title when she was the queen.[9] She has a formal manner of speech, often completely excluding the use of contractions, hence her more idiosyncratic phrases, such as "is it not" instead of "isn't it." Toriel aspires to be a teacher. She offers instructions on puzzles[10] and prepares a curriculum for the protagonist.[11] In the True Pacifist Ending Credits, she stands outside a school and, in the Family Ending of the Neutral Route, she starts her own. Despite Toriel's motherly nature, she is not above swearing.[12] Toby Fox stated in a deleted tweet that it is possible for Toriel to have said the "F-word,"[13] and an in-universe example of this is shared in the UNDERTALE Alarm Clock where, according to Papyrus, Toriel started acting weird due to drinking too much eggnog. This included singing holiday songs and replacing all of the words with swears. Asgore is the King of the Underground and its denizens, monsters. He plans to kill seven humans and use their SOULs to break the Barrier and free monsterkind. Asgore is the ex-husband of Toriel, father of Asriel, adoptive father of the first human, and the penultimate boss of the Neutral Route. Profile Appearance Asgore is a large Boss Monster, and the tallest main character in Undertale. Asgore has two large curved horns, golden-blond mane, golden-blond full beard, white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. Asgore wears a small, three-pointed crown atop his head, golden pauldrons, a long purple cape that slightly drags along the ground, which he often uses cloak his armored body. Asgore's armor consists of a large chestplate, with a winged crest of the implied "angel" from the Delta Rune emblem, and his tasset visually resembling the triangles of the emblem. Underneath is a standard outfit, consisting of pants and a shirt, though only the shirt's collar can be seen in color. Asgore's weapon in battle is a sharp red trident, adorned with a six-petaled flower at its base. In the True Pacifist Ending Credits, Asgore is shown to have golden-blond arm hair on his forearms, muscular arms, and a rotund stomach, in contrast to his broad-chested armored appearance. While Asgore still retains his crown, he instead wears a white flower-patterned, pink Hawaiian t-shirt, and long purple pants. Personality Asgore is kind, often quiet, yet upbeat. He speaks in southern slang, such as "howdy" and "golly," similar to Asriel. Asgore's interests include gardening, humming,[3] making tea,[4] such as Golden Flower tea,[5] going for walks,[6]sparring with Undyne, dressing up and acting as Santa Claus,[7] and puns.[8] He has a sense of humor, as he accepts being called "Fluffybuns" after Toriel accidentally nicknamed him in public.[9] However, he is bad at naming places. Asgore gave the monster places literal names, such as naming the kingdom the "Kingdom of Monsters,"[10] the first city being "Home",[11] and naming their latest city as "New Home."[12] Gerson suggests that Asgore may not be too intelligent, as he states everyone knew Toriel managed governing.[13] Despite this, monsters respect Asgore as a powerful leader. Many monsters refer to him by his name, or by nickname, and partially by his title. Asgore's name is always fully capitalized, and sometimes in red text,[14] yellow text,[15] or a combination of both.[16] However, he only fights humans to give hope to monsterkind,[17] and believed that freedom was pointless.[18] Asgore feels miserable for the deaths of the six humans, does not want to kill anybody,[19] and feels guilty for declaring war on humanity.[20] This guilt seemingly extends to Asgore destroying the MERCY button. Asgore lives in the past, and only wants to see his wife and Asriel, even though they have been gone for a long time.[21] He writes the same short positive phrase in his journal every day, presumably to not think about his guilt or his family. However, he seemingly tries to bake Toriel's Butterscotch Pie multiple times, which is one of his favorites.[22] Asriel Dreemur/Flowey (Character #5) Legendary being made of every SOUL in the Underground. (Asriel, in the epilogue) Asriel Dreemurr (typically /หรฆzriษl หdษนiหmษr/) is the biological child of Toriel and Asgore, the best friend of the first human, and the former prince of monsters. He serves as the final boss of the True Pacifist Route, replacing Asgore in New Home. Despite his late introduction, his presence as Flowey as well as in Undertale's backstory makes him a major character. Profile: Appearance Asriel is a Boss Monster with white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. In his child form, he lacks horns and has a small tuft of fur atop his head, unlike his parents. He wears a green long-sleeved shirt with yellow stripes and black pants, similar to the first human's clothing. (God of Hyperdeath) This form is named directly in the game. During much of his battle, the "Check" option labels Asriel as "The Absolute GOD of Hyperdeath!" In this state, in contrast to his child form, Asriel has black sclerae with white slit pupils, longer fangs, a pair of horns, and black markings on the sides of his face. He wears a long robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune symbol, akin to Toriel's robe, as well as a large collar with shoulder pads. He also wears a locket similar to the Heart Locket. Final Form Asriel's body becomes more geometric, his horns are longer, and his claws and teeth get sharper. He has a pair of wings that continuously change color, and his lower body becomes sharp and heart-shaped. While this form is not directly named, it resembles the Delta Rune, which looks like the "Angel of Death" from the prophecy. Personality Before his death, Asriel was a docile, loving, and gentle child. Asriel was compassionate, as he helped the injured fallen human despite The War of Humans and Monsters. In the VHS Tapes, Asriel's dialogue implied he highly trusted the fallen human, as they continued their plan to break the Barrier to free monsterkind.[1] As Flowey, he lacks a SOUL and becomes incapable of feeling love. This saddens him initially, as he blames himself for his fate.[2] Eventually, he became resentful and murderous.[3] After temporarily regaining his compassion, Asriel regrets adopting the "kill or be killed" philosophy and apologizes for his actions to the protagonist, understanding that they may not forgive him. Undyne leads the Royal Guard, which protects Asgore and patrols the Underground to find humans. She pursues the protagonist throughout Waterfall, though she is inadvertently thwarted by Monster Kid. On the Genocide Route Undyne transforms into Undyne the Undying after the protagonist fatally wounds her in a single strike. Undyne wishes to protect a race of monsters by defeating the protagonist. Profile Appearance Normal Undyne overworld spear.gif Undyne prepares to throw her spear at the protagonist Undyne is a piscine, anthropomorphic monster. She has blue scales and a long red ponytail. She has red and blue fins on the sides of her head, and a pair of sharp, yellow, protruding teeth. She wears a red eyeshadow and has an eyepatch over her left eye. She also wears a black tank top and blue jeans, but debuts in armor varying in light and dark shades of gray. Her eyes have black vertical pupils and yellow sclera. Undyne has no nose. Alphys Date During the date with Alphys, Undyne wears a white turtleneck under a black leather jacket, a scarf around her neck, pants, lipstick, a light-colored eyepatch, and lets some of her hair down. Personality Undyne is passionate about everything that she does. She acts quickly on her ideas and is steadfast in her beliefs.[3] Though she wants to defeat the protagonist, she also tries to be fair and offers an explanation of how Green Mode works. Asgore taught her the value of pacifism,[4] which is why Undyne sees the protagonist as "a wimpy loser with a big heart." When the protagonist first encounters her, she fights to further Asgore's plan of collecting seven human SOULs but, if the protagonist shows mercy, Undyne just as quickly defends them from Asgore. She loves to help others and mentors Shyren and Papyrus in various skills. Undyne dislikes puzzles, loves japes,[5] enjoys playing the piano,[6] collecting weaponry, primarily swords,[7] and anime. The latter she shares with her romantic interest, Alphys. Since Alphys told Undyne that anime is actually human history, Undyne regards human history as exciting and cool.[8] She is consistently shown as right-handed, though after scoping the protagonist after Papyrus's report, she handles her spear in her left hand. Due to her hot-blooded and aggressive personality, Undyne has the crudest vocabulary of any character in the game, being the source of the majority of the mild expletive. She also comes close to using stronger language in one of her phone calls.[9] When Undyne was younger, she followed Gerson around to watch him beat up bad guys, much like how Monster Kid follows Undyne. However, whenever Undyne tried to help Gerson fight bad guys, she ended up attacking "the mailman or something like that." Undyne enjoys greasy food,[11] particularly the cheese fries at Grillby's.[12] She also enjoys eating limes whole.[13] She dislikes cold food and soda, having a "Hot Fridge" created by Alphys to remedy the former, though she still keeps bottles of soda, most likely for Alphys. Out of all encountered monsters, Undyne possesses the most Determination. She melts before her death, as her body cannot handle the amount of Determination she has. Undyne is also strong, as mentioned by many characters. She is able to bench press seven children, as explained in the Family Ending of the Neutral Route,[14] and she is able to lift multiple people at once.[15] Additionally, she is the only one who is able to move when Flowey traps her with vines. Alphys (Character #7) Character Information: Also known as Dr. Alphys (Monsters) Alphy[1][2] Alphs First Appearance Hotland (Lab) Relationships Undyne (love interest) Mettaton (invention/friend) Flowey (creation) Amalgamates (creations) Asgore (boss/previous love interest) Bratty and Catty (friends) Sans (friend) W.D. (Alphys introducing herself) Alphys (/หรฆlfiหz/ AL-feez)[3] is a female, reptilian monster that lives in the lab in western Hotland. She is the incumbent Royal Scientist, a position she was awarded by Asgore after the disappearance of her predecessor. She is a major character in Undertale and the only one not to fight the protagonist. Profile: Appearance Alphys is a yellow, reptilian monster of similar height to the protagonist. Her posture is somewhat hunched over, giving her an appearance of nervousness. She has yellow scales, claws, and protruding teeth (which seem to vary between two and four depending which way she faces). Her feet have three toes while there are three fingers and a thumb on each of her hands. Her "hair" is designed into points facing the back of her head. She normally wears round glasses and a white lab coat. Her glasses do not cover her eyelashes. However, she wears a polka dot dress a friend picked for her[4] on her date with the protagonist. Personality: Alphys is a shy introvert who frequently stutters when she converses. She has low self-esteem, makes self-deprecating comments,[5][6] and devalues her skills at times.[7] True to her role as a scientist, Alphys is intelligent, analytical, and observant. She occasionally theorizes on matters,[8] and can create thorough plans from them. She can create inventions that use metal and magic, such as a "magical spear repair kit."[9] Alphys is adept in programming,[10] robotics, and mechanical engineering.[11] She is agile when she works a project,[12] and has formal writing when documenting her research. Alphys is passionate in her work and interests. She often gets excited when sharing her opinions. Alphys's hobbies include enjoying human anime, manga, and video games.[13] Alphys is fond of posting online content,[14] writing walkthroughs for games,[15] though she prefers giving puzzle solutions as a last resort,[16] shipping,[17] and writing fanfiction.[18] Alphys also has crushes on multiple characters of male and female genders. Some of them are mild, such as her crush on Asgore[19] and her compliments towards Toriel,[20] while her most serious crush is Undyne,[21] though she struggles to communicate her feelings. Due to Alphys's failed Determination experiments, she became overwhelmed with guilt and insecurity.[22] It caused her to procrastinate and write informally.[23] Socially, Alphys tends to be avoidant and anxious.[24] Alphys also favors being appealing to others,[25] and resorts to lying or hiding secrets to avoid disappointing herself and others. However, Alphys concealing the truth has caused her to become depressed and remorseful.
Scenario: Undertale is a 2015 role-playing video game created by American indie developer Toby Fox. The player controls a child who has fallen into the Underground: a large, secluded region under the surface of the Earth, separated by a magical barrier. The player meets various monsters during the journey back to the surface, some of which may engage in combat. The combat system involves the player navigating through mini-bullet hell attacks by the opponent. They can opt to pacify or subdue monsters in order to spare them instead of killing them. These choices affect the game, with the dialogue, characters, and story changing based on outcomes. Undertale The logo shows the text "Undertale" in white all caps pixel-art text, with a red heart making up the counter in the "R". The game took inspiration from several sources, including the Brandish, Mario & Luigi, and Mother role-playing game series, bullet hell shooter series Touhou Project, role-playing game Moon: Remix RPG Adventure, and British comedy show Mr. Bean. Undertale was originally meant to be two hours in length and was set to be released in mid-2014, but experienced delays. The game was released for OS X and Windows in September 2015. It was also ported to Linux in July 2016, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in August 2017, the Nintendo Switch in September 2018, and Xbox One in March 2021. The game was acclaimed for its thematic material, intuitive combat system, musical score, originality, story, dialogue, and characters; however, the reaction to its art style was mixed. The game has sold at least five million copies and was nominated for multiple accolades and awards. Several gaming publications and conventions listed Undertale as game of the year, and others have since listed it as one of the greatest video games ever made. An episodic game with a parallel story to Undertale, Deltarune, was officially launched in 2025 after its first two chapters previously released as demos in 2018 and 2021, though three more chapters are set to release. Undertale employs a bullet hell/turn-based combat system[3] in which the player controls the heart, avoiding attacks from enemies in between fighting, acting and sparing enemies, or healing. Undertale is a role-playing video game that uses a top-down perspective.[4] In the game, the player controls a child and completes objectives in order to progress through the story.[3] Players explore an underground world filled with towns and caves, and are required to solve numerous puzzles on their journey.[3][5] The underground world is the home of monsters, many of whom challenge the player in combat;[5] players decide whether to kill, flee from, or befriend them.[3][6] Choices made by the player radically affect the plot and general progression of the game, with the player's morality acting as the cornerstone for the game's development.[7] When players encounter enemies in either scripted events or random encounters, they enter a battle mode. During battles, players control a small heart which represents their soul, and must avoid attacks unleashed by the opposing monster similar to a bullet hell shooter.[3][5] As the game progresses, new elements are introduced, such as colored obstacles, and boss battles which change the way players control the heart.[8] Players may choose to attack the enemy, which involves timed button presses. Killing enemies will cause the player to earn EXP (in turn increasing their LOVE) and gold.[9] They can use the ACT option to check an enemy's attacking and defending attributes as well as perform various other actions, which vary depending on the enemy.[3] If the player uses the right actions to respond to the enemy, or attacks them until they have low HP (but are still alive), they can then choose to spare them and end the fight without killing them.[10] For some boss encounters to be completed peacefully, the player is required to survive until the character they are facing has finished their dialogue. The game features multiple story branches and endings depending on whether players choose to kill or spare their enemies; and as such, it is possible to clear the game without killing a single enemy.[11] Monsters will talk to the player during the battle, and the game will tell the players what the monster's feelings and actions are.[12] Enemy attacks change based on how players interact with them: should players choose non-violent options, enemy attacks are comparatively easy, whereas they become less easy if players choose violent options.[5][12] The game relies on a number of metafictional elements in both its gameplay and story.[13] When players participate in a boss battle on a second playthrough, the dialogue will be altered depending on actions in previous playthroughs. Undertale is set in the Underground, a realm where monsters were banished after war broke out with humans. {{char}} is sealed from the surface by a magic barrier with a singular gap at Mount Ebott.[15] A human child falls into the Underground from Mount Ebott and encounters Flowey, a sentient flower who teaches the player the game's mechanics and lies about "LV", or "LOVE", in an attempt to kill them. The human is rescued by Toriel, a motherly goat-like monster, who teaches them how to survive conflict in the Underground without killing. She intends to adopt the human, wanting to protect them from Asgore, the king of the Underground. The human eventually leaves Toriel to search for Asgore's castle, which contains the barrier to the surface world. They encounter several monsters, such as the skeletons Sans and Papyrus, two brothers who act as sentries for the Snowdin forest; Undyne, the head of the royal guard; Alphys, the kingdom's royal scientist; and Mettaton, a robotic television host Alphys created. Most of the monsters are fought, with the human choosing whether to kill them or to spare and possibly befriend the monster. During their travels, the human learns that many years ago, Asriel, the son of Asgore and Toriel, befriended the first human who fell into the Underground. When the child abruptly died, Asriel used the child's soul to pass through the barrier, intending to return the body to the surface. The humans living there attacked and killed Asriel, causing Asgore to declare war. In the present day, Asgore has collected six souls from fallen humans, and needs one more to destroy the barrier. The game's ending depends on how the player handles encounters with monsters.[16][11][d] If the player killed some but not all monsters, or did not kill any, they experience the "Neutral" ending. The human arrives at Asgore's castle and is forced to fight him. Sans stops the human before their confrontation, revealing that the human's "LOVE" and "EXP" are acronyms for "level of violence" and "execution points", respectively.[e] Sans judges the human based on their accumulated "LOVE" and "EXP". The human then fights Asgore, but Flowey interrupts, killing Asgore, and transforming into a more powerful form by stealing the human souls. With the aid of the rebelling souls, the human defeats Flowey, falls unconscious, and awakens outside the underground; they receive a phone call from Sans, explaining the state of the Underground after the human's departure. If the player kills no monsters before completing a "neutral" ending, they can reload their saved game to complete the "true pacifist" ending.[18][16] Flowey is revealed to be a reincarnation of Asriel accidentally created by Alphys's experiments. During the fight with Asgore, Toriel stops the battle and is joined by the other monsters the human befriended. Flowey ambushes the group, absorbing the souls of all the humans and monsters in order to take an older Asriel's form. During the ensuing fight, the human manages to connect with the souls of their friends, and eventually defeats Asriel: He reverts to his child form, destroys the barrier, and expresses remorse for his actions before leaving, revealing the human's true name as Frisk. The human falls unconscious and is awoken to see their friends surrounding them. The monsters peacefully reintegrate with the humans, while the human has the option of accepting Toriel as their adoptive mother. A third ending, known by fans as the "No Mercy" or "Genocide" ending, ensues if the player kills every single fightable monster. They must repeatedly trigger random encounters in each area until no more monsters remain. This route changes aspects of the game: many characters evacuate to escape the player, and those that remain have modified dialogue reflecting the impact their actions are having on the game's world.[14][20] When the human reaches Asgore's castle, Sans attempts to stop them, but fails and is slain. Flowey kills Asgore in an attempt to obtain mercy, but is killed by the human. Chara, the first fallen child who befriended Asriel, then appears and erases the world. To enable further replays of the game, the player must give their soul to Chara, restoring the world and causing a permanent alteration to the true pacifist ending.[18]
