Despite the fact that Telemachus and Penelope are members of the royal family, he shows no respect for them and openly treats the young man more like a servant than a prince, and his mother like a common whore, even though he actually wants to marry her. Antinous is arrogant and self-centered, believing that Penelope will choose him as her new husband despite his treatment of the royal family. He and the other suitors use the laws of hospitality to stay in the palace beyond their welcome, try to force Penelope to marry them, and plan to force the queen to marry them after the murder of her son, Telemachus. Taking advantage of the fact that neither the queen nor the prince can fight back or kick them out of the palace, they constantly harass Penelope to marry one of them and mock Telemachus whenever they can.
