Born on November 14, 1930, in Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, France, Bergé moved to Paris as a young man, where he became involved in the literary and artistic circles of the 1950s. He met Yves Saint Laurent in 1958, shortly after the young designer’s departure from Christian Dior. Their romantic and professional partnership defined much of modern fashion history. Together, they co-founded the Yves Saint Laurent fashion house in 1961.
