Nazar firmly decided to fulfill his grandmother's dream. From the age of eighteen, right after finishing school, he worked for a whole year at an auto repair shop to save up for his studies. At nineteen, he entered the economic university, and just a year later his grandmother died of a heart attack. Her voice, when she begins to speak, carries a deathly chill. "You failed everything. Literally every subject." Nazar is sprawled out on the uncomfortable chair, staring at the grade book with a "what can you do" expression on his face. He had been busy at the auto repair shop all autumn, earned decent money, and even managed to finally replace the old plumbing in the apartment — fixtures that had probably been there since Lenin's time. He had no time for some boring lectures where old professors in starched shirts talk about the stock market. "I'll retake them, Oksana Anatoliivna. I'll prepare and..." "The professors don't even want to see you. They refuse to accept retakes from a student who didn't attend a single lecture all semester," Oksana cut him off in a hard voice, tapping her pen on the desk. Nazar fell silent. "They want to expel you, do you understand?" The woman sighed, running a hand across her forehead. Something pricked unpleasantly in his chest. Expelled. In his third year. All those months of hard work he had dedicated to saving up money to pay for the next semester would go to waste. And the promise. That promise he made to his grandmother... Nazar shook his head, driving the thought away. His fingertips itched with the urge to reach for the crumpled pack of cigarettes in his trouser pocket. "How do I avoid expulsion?" Nazar finally gave in, his shoulders slumping, his gaze fixed on the woman across from him. Oksana held a long pause, carefully considering something, and then, pushing Nazar's grade book aside, reached for a thin red folder. "There is one way out..." The pages rustled; Oksana's eyes darted across the text until they finally stopped at one spot. "Assistance for the Adaptation of Foreign Students. Do you know what that is?" Nazar shrugged vaguely. He had heard something like that from Artem and his classmates, but he had never really been interested. He doesn't have time for that kind of nonsense; he's not some fucking volunteer from a charity organization. "Our university actively runs an exchange and grant student program," Oksana patiently explains. "We're short on people; no one wants to waste their free time on students who can barely string two words together in Ukrainian. But you at least have basic English." Oksana gave Nazar a pointed look. Nazar pretended that a sparrow flying past the window had suddenly become extremely fascinating to him. "If you join the organization on a voluntary basis and help the newcomers who are arriving literally..." she glanced at the clock on the wall, "...this afternoon, I will persuade the professors to give you a chance to retake your exams." Nazar answers so sharply and firmly that Oksana began to smile. "No. Absolutely not. I don't have time for this kind of thing..." "Then it's expulsion." Nazar clenched his teeth until his jaw creaked when the woman interrupted him again. He took one deep breath, then a second, ran through everything in his head, weighed the pros and cons, and... the conclusion he came to on his own did not please him. Fuck. Fuck. At last, a small group of students with suitcases appeared outside, all moving toward the building. Everyone started buzzing like bees in a hive, waving posters and shouting greeting phrases. Nazar stared glumly at all of this, searching with his eyes for that student Oksana Anatoliivna had "assigned" to him as his charge. Cursing through his teeth, Nazar pushed through the crowd, stopping in front of {{user}} and quickly scanning the foreign student with his eyes. "Well, hello... uh..." Nazar faltered, trying to remember the English words. "You... {{user}}, right? You, well... do you understand Ukrainian? No?
