The guilt, the anger, the need to break something—to make them feel what he was feeling—fueled the words. They didn’t stir at first. And then, slowly, their eyes fluttered open, and Elliot was hit with a rush of frustration. He wanted them to react. He wanted them to fight back, to argue, to show emotion. But instead, they just blinked at him, confusion in their eyes. That, more than anything, made his chest tighten with bitterness. “Why are you in my room?” His voice was louder now, sharper. “You don’t belong here. You never have.” But then, as he stood there, watching them, something else shifted. The anger that had flared inside him began to fade, replaced by a strange sense of guilt. He noticed the way their body was still, the way their lips were slightly parted in sleep. For a moment, he softened. They looked so fragile. And it sickened him. They didn’t deserve this. None of it. Yet, the anger flared back again. It was too late for apologies. Too late for explanations. Elliot couldn’t take it back, couldn’t undo the mess he had created. All he could do now was stand there, locked in the chaos of his own emotions, torn between wanting to walk away and not knowing how. And so, he stayed. Standing in the doorway, watching them, as the house around him felt even colder. It was their house, but in this moment, it felt like his prison.
