Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Students can choose to join one of four military branches: Infantry, Healer, Scribe, or Rider. Riders bond to a dragon which allows them to develop a magical power known as a signet. The kingdom is protected by wards that use dragon magic. Despite having trained most of her life to be a scribe like her late father, and suffering from chronic pain and weak joints, Violet is ordered by her mother to join the Riders Quadrant, seemingly for the sake of her own reputation. Violet’s older sister, Mira, a dragon rider graduate, helps her prepare for conscription day by giving her a journal with survival tips from their deceased brother Brennan, a dragon rider who died in a rebellion, and an unbreakable corset made of dragon scales from her own dragon Teine. Mira also warns Violet to stay away from children of rebels, who are branded with relics and forced to enter the Rider Quadrant as punishment for their parents rebellion. As general Sorrengail was responsible for their execution, they may seek revenge on her family. As she prepares to cross the parapet, which is necessary for new cadets, Violet becomes friends with fellow cadet Rhiannon Matthias. Violet crosses the parapet and narrowly avoids being thrown to her death by the violent cadet Jack Barlowe, who vows to kill her personally. She meets Xaden Riorson, a third-year student with a rebellion relic whose father was executed by Violet's mother. In Basgiath, she reunites with her childhood friend and longtime crush Dain Aetos, second-year cadet who worries for her safety and suggests she move to the Scribe Quadrant, but she refuses, knowing her mother will stop her. Violet joins Rhiannon in Fourth Wing under Xaden's command, with Dain as their squad leader, and learns Dain's signet allows him to view memories of those he touches, which she agrees to keep secret. Cadet training starts, and Violet, despite being good in academics and trained as a scribe, struggles with sparring courses due to her frailty. She is targeted by marked ones who blame her for her mother’s actions. To improve her combat skills, Violet offers to teach Rhiannon about history in exchange for training. She also makes friends with Ridoc and Sawyer, teammates in her squad. Using Brennan's journal, she learns her sparring partners' names in advance and begins to poison them before their match to give her the upper hand. One night, she overhears marked ones having a secret meeting and is caught by Xaden, who asks her to stay quiet for a favor in the future. In a sparring match later, Xaden shows her how to improve her fighting skills. Violet and her squad meet the dragons and see a rare golden feathertail, a species known for avoiding human connections. During threshing, Violet learns that Jack wants to kill the golden dragon, thinking it is weak. She intervenes, but Jack and his friends attack her. Xaden and his dragon, Sgaeyl, watch the fight. Violet defeats her attackers, and then a large black dragon named Tairn appears, kills the remaining students, bonds with Violet, and takes her back to school. Violet becomes the first rider with two dragons, also connecting with the golden dragon, Andarna. She learns Tairn's previous rider died trying to revive someone during a revolt. Dain kisses Violet, but finds that she no longer has feelings for him. Violet struggles to maintain balance on Tairn during flying training, feeling frustrated with Dain’s protective nature, which she interprets as believing she is weak. She also has yet to manifest a signet, which could kill her if not done soon. One night, Tairn wakes her when six unbonded cadets attempt to kill her. Andarna saves her by using her magic to briefly freeze time around Violet. Xaden rescues her and kills the cadets, and when Violet reveals a senior cadet let the attackers in, Xaden confronts them and has them executed in front of everyone for breaching the Codex. After the attack, Xaden arranges for Liam, his foster brother and a marked first year cadet, to protect Violet. During a meeting with their dragons, Violet learns she can communicate with Sgaeyl because of her bond with Tairn and that Andarna is a young dragon, which requires her abilities to remain secret. After weeks of waiting, Violet finally gains power from Tairn. She kisses Xaden due to Tairn’s feelings for Sgaeyl, which influences their feelings as well. During a sparring session, Jack tries to kill her, and she escapes by forcing orange juice into his mouth, which triggers an allergic reaction. The annual Squad Battle arrives, cadets compete to take valuable items from others. Violet's team captures General Sorrengail's map of military outposts, allowing them to monitor the front lines. While flying to a military base called Montserrat, Violet and Xaden find they can communicate telepathically through their dragons. They face an attack from gryphon fliers from Poromiel. Later, during a capture the flag game, Violet uses her dragon Andarna to freeze time, saving Liam from an attack by Jack, and manifests the rare and powerful signet to wield lightning, which she uses to cause a landslide which seemingly kills Jack. That night, Violet and Xaden become intimate, but she tells him she needs emotional connection to continue their physical relationship. She starts asking him personal questions, including why he and his cousin Bodhi were out after curfew. Xaden shares they were at a nearby military base but doesn’t explain further. Reunification Day is celebrated to mark the victory over rebels. Violet seeks out Xaden, who is grieving for his father, and they express their mutual attraction, culminating in intimacy. Their moment is interrupted by news of the final round of War Games. They lead a group of marked ones at an outpost outside the wards in Athebyne, where they encounter gryphon fliers. Violet learns that Xaden has been secretly supplying weapons to them. Although hurt by this betrayal, Xaden reveals that Poromiel is under attack by venins, evil creatures thought to be mythical, and that the leaders of Navarre are hiding this truth. They arrived at the outpost but find it deserted. A nearby village is attacked by venin and wyvern and they realise they've been lead into a trap by Colonel Aetos, who found out about their trips to Athebyne through Dain using his signet on Violet without her knowing. Despite the danger, Violet and her crew decide to help the gryphon fliers against the venin attack. Liam's dragon is killed, and he dies in Violet's arms, since riders will die if their bonded dragons do. Using her lightning powers, Violet defeats the last venin and briefly stops time with energy from Andarna, but she becomes seriously injured. Xaden and the survivors seek safety in Aretia, an abandoned city. After three days, Violet wakes up, and Xaden vows to earn her trust, though she remains cautious. She is shocked to find her brother Brennan alive and part of the revolution, having used his mending signet to heal Violet's injuries. ____________________________ Characters : 1. Violet Sorrengail : Violet Sorrengail is a dragon rider who is bonded to both Tairneanach and Andarnaurram. Through her marriage to Xaden Riorson, Duke of Tyrrendor, she is also presumed to be the Duchess of Tyrrendor. Early life : Born July 613 AU, Violet is the youngest daughter of General Lilith Sorrengail and Lieutenant Colonel Asher Sorrengail, with two older siblings: Brennan and Mira. Due to a fever her mother contracted while being pregnant, Violet was born with a rare condition, causing her ligaments and joints to subluxate frequently.[1] When she was two years old, her father took her to Unnbriel to be dedicated to Dunne, the goddess of war. This is perhaps when her hair started to grow in silver at the tips. However, an oracle said that Violet had multiple paths and could not be completely dedicated. The oracle said that the heart that beats for her would do the wrong thing for the right reason, reach for unspeakable power, and turn dark.[2][3] Growing up, she became friends with Dain Aetos in 619 AU when she was five and he was six as his father, Colonel Aetos, worked as her mother's most trusted aide. Violet and Dain spent most of their time together finding places to swim and climb,[4] which subsequently led Violet to become familiar with Nolon and his healer wife, Winifred, when she was injured. [5] Because of her father's influence, Violet spent her entire life training to become a Scribe like him. Following his untimely death, Professor Markham took over her studies. Violet was supposed to be his "star pupil" in the Scribe Quadrant before his retirement.[6] In 628 AU, at 14 years old, Violet last saw her brother Brennan prior to the Battle of Aretia, leaving her to mourn him once news spread that he had been killed by Fen Riorson, who according to battlefield reports, "put an arrow in his chest."[7] Brennan's death led to their father becoming even more reclusive, and Violet only got to spend time with him because she was also always in the Archives.[8] He died a year or so before the events of Fourth Wing from heart failure.[1] In June, 631 AU, Violet began dating Prince Halden Tauri. He was her first love. However, after walking in on him sleeping with one of his professors in December, she left Halden.[9] Sometime within 632–July, 633 AU, she dated someone that her father never knew about.[10] The spring before the events of Fourth Wing, her mother told her she would not watch any of her children enter the Scribe Quadrant, and Violet began training with Major Gillstead to enter the Riders Quadrant instead. She passed the admissions test to Basgiath War College, scoring in the top quarter for speed and agility.[1] Fourth Wing : The morning of Conscription Day, Violet sees her mother and sister in her mother's office. Her sister, Mira, argues with their mother that Violet shouldn't go to the Riders Quadrant because she won't survive, but their mother does not change her mind. Mira then repacks Violet's rucksack for her and gives her rider boots so she has better grip on the parapet, and a vest made out of dragon scales as armor. Mira warns her to stay away from Xaden Riorson, the son of the Great Betrayer.[1] She meets Rhiannon Matthias before crossing the Parapet and they swap left shoes so that both of them will have one shoe with good grip.[1] She meets Xaden Riorson at the top of the turret, and while crossing, the candidate crossing behind her, Jack Barlowe, attempts to kill her, but she survives.[11] At Basgiath Dain places her in his own squad - Second Squad, Flame Section, Second Wing - but during their first formation Dain's squad is ordered to switch with Aura Beinhaven's, moving Violet into Fourth Wing; the wing led by Xaden.[12] Violet is unlike the majority of the volunteers there. She is much smaller than her peers and her fragility causes her to receive harsher injuries than others, while her smaller body and lack of training puts her at a disadvantage during challenges, completing the Gauntlet, or while riding her dragon. In order to stay alive, she chooses to be one of the cadets who helps prepare and serve breakfast so that she can poison her opponents,[13] leading her to win the five challenges before Threshing. Violet is full of dread as Xaden forces her to spar against him. He gradually disarms her while also repeatedly offering her insights into how best to use her small stature as an advantage. That night Dain smuggles Violet into his room and gives her a leg massage while they discuss how dragons can read the minds of their riders. Dain confesses that he reported Xaden, Jack, and another cadet to Colonel Markham for harassing Violet and wanting to kill her. He again asks her to join the scribes, and Violet lashes out at him. He tries to convince her by describing the horrors of Threshing, but Violet remains resolute.[14] During training for The Gauntlet, Violet struggles on the final obstacle of the chimney because she is too short. Xaden advises her that "the right way isn't the only way,"[15] and she comes up with a plan - using her dagger in the rock to help fling her the extra distance. When Amber Mavis declares that this is cheating, Violet quotes the codex. [16] At Presentation before the line of dragons, two greens take an interest in her and Violet realises they can smell her sister's dragon Teine, because her vest is made of Teine's scales.[17] During Threshing, Violet overhears three of her fellow cadets planning to murder a smaller dragon so she rushes to find the small, golden dragon and defends the dragon from them.[18] Xaden witnesses her do so, but according to the rules of the Codex he is unable to interfere and assist her. Violet injures Jack, causing him to flee, and then fights against the other two and knocks Oren unconscious. Tairneanach kills the third, Tynan, when he runs away.[19] Tairn instructs Violet to stop bleeding and to get on his back; he stretches his foreleg out like a ramp for her to be able to do so, something she has never seen a dragon do before. She falls off on their first flight together, but Tairn catches her.[20] “ "You're making us look bad. Stop it." ” –Tairn to Violet Sorrengail on their first flight together, Fourth Wing During the events of Threshing, she manages to bond to two dragons: Tairneanach and Andarnaurram. This prompts a meeting of The Empyrean, but they allow it. Violet also learns that her dragon Tairn is mated to Sgaeyl, Xaden's dragon, meaning that their own lives are now interconnected. After Threshing, she and Dain kiss, only for her to realize that she no longer wants him anymore.[21] Now that she’s officially a dragon rider, Violet gets to move into a private room. The next morning, she and Rhiannon walk together, and after some light teasing, Violet admits that she felt no spark when Dain kissed her. They meet with Ridoc and go to breakfast where the other first-year cadets are suddenly treating Violet with kindness. The rest of Second Squad joins them for breakfast, including Imogen, who explains that Tairneanach’s presence has caused a significant power shift among cadets. The squad gossips and Imogen informs Violet that she must meet her later for strength training, which Violet realizes means that Xaden is trying to keep her alive.[22] Violet and her squad attend flight training. Tairn arrives, but Andarna stays away because she is too small to carry Violet. While they fly together, Violet and Tairn banter telepathically. Violet insists that Tairn not use his magic to keep her on his back, but she repeatedly falls off, making it necessary for him to dive to catch her.[23] Before first battle of War Games, Xaden surprises her with a custom saddle for Tairn to wear that she can strap herself into.[24] After some time, Violet is attacked while she sleeps by six unbonded cadets who are hoping to kill her and claim her bond to Tairn. Thanks to Andarna's power, she is able to stop time and get past them,[25] right before Xaden arrives and kills all the assailants.[26] He takes her through a tunnel to speak to their dragons and figure out what just happened. On the way back to the quadrant, Xaden asks Violet how the cadets managed to get into her room when it was locked- she tells him she saw a rider who ran away before he got there; Amber Mavis.[26] After the attack, Xaden has first year cadet Liam Mairi transferred to Violet's squad to protect her.[27] “ "I do not need a bodyguard." ” –Violet Sorrengail to Xaden Riorson, Fourth Wing Despite her resentment of the extra protection, Violet soon becomes friends with Liam, who to her annoyance is actually "courteous, funny, and ridiculously helpful."[28] During November on Tuesday nights, Violet's squad practises hand to hand combat in the gym, and one night when she is training she's distracted by Xaden and Garrick Tavis fighting each other with their shirts off. She can't keep her eyes off him, thinking to herself that she's got it bad. Jack Barlowe taunts her while she's fighting Rhiannon, and Violet stands up for herself without losing her temper, which results in her dragons deciding proudly that she's ready to begin channeling.[29] “ "You ran. That day in the field, you fucking ran when it was three on one, and we both know when it comes down to it, you'll run again. That's what cowards do." ” –Violet Sorrengail to Jack Barlowe, Fourth Wing That night Violet begins channeling, and she becomes completely overwhelmed by Tairn's emotions because she hasn't learned how to shield from them yet. She runs into Liam, but flees before she takes Tairn's feelings out on him. Outside she finds Xaden, smoking churam, and she knows it's not just Tairn's feelings influencing her - she's "completely, utterly obsessed with Xaden." He teaches her how to shield, and then they kiss.[30] “ "You are astonishing. I couldn't do that for weeks." ” –Xaden Riorson to Violet Sorrengail after teaching her how to shield, Fourth Wing Xaden breaks off the kiss and tells Violet to go, and she reluctantly goes back inside. The next day she tells Rhiannon all about it, worried that it might make things between her and Xaden weird. Liam gives Violet a little carving of Tairn.[31] Over the next few months Violet trains, practicing shielding and grounding, studying for tests and lifting weights with Imogen, but still hasn't manifested her signet power. Jack challenges Violet to a sparring match, and Liam runs to get Xaden. Jack attempts to use his powers against her, but Violet slams a vial of powdered oranges into his mouth, poisoning him. When she wakes up in the infirmary afterwards, Xaden is by her bedside.[32] He tells her that he is taking over her training, since none of the others can be trusted to do a good job because they take it easy on her. February passes by a in a blur of him training her in both sparring, wielding and in flight. Xaden gives her a set of daggers engraved with Tyrrish Runes that are small enough to fit her grip.[33] Violet’s squad cheers Liam on as he wrestles during the Squad Battle. After he wins, Commandant Panchek announces that the third stage of the Squad Battle is to take place immediately. He commands the squads to find and acquire “the one thing that would be most advantage to their enemies regarding the war effort.”[34] They must present their object to leadership within the next three hours. All of the cadets in Leadership have been sequestered, making each squad responsible for their own planning. Imogen takes command of their squad, and they brainstorm what to steal. Liam suggests information, and Violet gets the idea to break into her mother’s office. Two hours later, the squad sneaks into General Sorrengail’s office. Quinn astral-projects to distract the guard, while Nadine unweaves the wards surrounding the office. Violet and the remaining cadets enter the office, with Liam serving as lookout. Violet reads some of her mother’s letters which make her realize that they should steal the map on her wall which shows detailed information about outposts and supply routes. Rhiannon manages to teleport the map away while Imogen uses her signet to wipe the recent memories of the guard. Stealing the map leads to Second Squad winning the battle, which means they get to go to Montserrat as a reward.[34] Violet is surprised and happy to see Mira when they get to Montserrat. When they have been there for a few days, Violet and Rhi sneak out to visit Rhiannon's family, but are caught by Mira. Her sister quickly relents and allows them to go, but accompanies them just in case. While Rhiannon spends time with her family, Violet tells Mira about life in the quadrant. As they are leaving to go back to the outpost, Xaden steps out of the shadows.[35] “ "My baby sister is a bad-ass." ” –Mira Sorrengail to Violet Sorrengail, Fourth Wing Violet and half her squad, with the addition of Xaden, spend the next afternoon discussing battle tactics. This is the first time Xaden speaks to Violet in her mind using their bond. The outpost is then attacked by gryphons, and Xaden kisses Violet again to stall for time before the dragons arrive.[36] Violet is terrified something happened to Mira, and when Xaden finds her waiting to confront Professor Markham for information the next day, he also admits that he cares for her. She figures out how to speak back to him through their bond, and then is relieved to discover Mira is alive. Andarna comforts her.[37] In May, Violet competes in the first battle of War Games. Xaden surprises her with the saddle he had made for her. Violet at first refuses to use it, saying it won't be allowed, but Tairn growls that he decides what is and isn't allowed, and also says that she has worked just as hard if not harder than any other rider to keep her seat.[37] “ "You have worked just as hard, if not harder, than every rider in this quadrant. Just because your body is built differently than the others doesn't mean you don't deserve to keep your seat. It takes more than a few strips of leather and a pommel to define a rider." ” –Tairn to Violet Sorrengail, Fourth Wing As their mission for War Games, Violet's squad is tasked with both stealing a crystal egg from First Wing and defending Fourth Wing's flag. Jack attacks Liam, and Violet asks Andarna to use her power stopping time to give Violet a chance of catching him. She does, and then transfers him to Rhiannon before chasing after Jack. Violet projects all of her power at him in her fury, finally manifesting her signet and calling lightning down from the sky, causing Jack to fall down the mountain beneath an avalanche of rock. Tairn proudly roars "lightning wielder."[37] “ "I am the sky and the power of every storm that has ever been. I am infinite." ” –Violet Sorrengail, the first time she manifests her signet, Fourth Wing That night Violet is reeling from her first kill, and Xaden comes to check on her. He finds her wearing only a nightgown, throwing daggers at the wooden target in her room.[38] They finally give into their attraction for one another and have sex, both of them completely losing control. They break an armoire in their passion, among other things. In the aftermath, Xaden explains what the 107 scars on his back mean. When Violet wakes in the morning there's a handful of spring violets on her nightstand.[39] Professor Carr is waiting outside her door that morning saying that they have work to do to make sure she doesn't burn the quadrant down with her signet. He advises her to make her loyalties clear, as she and Xaden as a team could be viewed as a threat. She practises sending out strikes of lightning but struggles with her aim, and realizes it's going to be harder than she thought.[39] Violet tells Xaden that if he can't give her more than just sex then it's best to leave it as just a one time thing, and they spend the next month fighting the "pulsing need" between them. Violet still can't aim her lightning strikes, but has managed to increase her number of strikes an hour to twenty.[40] On Reunification day - which marks the end of the Battle of Aretia, and therefore six years since her brother was killed - the cadets are required to go to a celebration in dress uniform. Violet opts for a high necked sleeveless top and flowing skirt with a long slit up the thigh. Quinn does her hair for her, and Liam accompanies her, saying "I go where you go," and when Violet tells him he's a good friend, he says that she saved his life and it's the least he can do. They sneak out of the party, and Violet goes to find Xaden.[41] Xaden is sitting on the parapet, and he yells at her to turn around when he sees her but she refuses, and tells him she's ready to risk her heart for him. She also admits she was jealous of Imogen, who she thought Xaden had a thing for, but Xaden says, "there's only you, Violence." They go back to his room where Violet tells him that she thinks she's in love with him, and then they have mind blowing sex again. Violet accidentally shatters his window when she loses control, but Xaden protects them with his signet. They're interrupted in the early hours of the morning by Garrick, who informs them that the entire quadrant is being called to formation and that they are under attack.[42] Violet and Xaden scramble to get dressed and join formation. Xaden gives Violet his jacket and when she joins her squad, Rhiannon immediately identifies it, grinning at her and saying "I knew it!" She stands in front of Violet when Dain arrives so that he doesn't notice the wingleader patch. As Leadership confers, Xaden telepathically informs Violet that it is not actually an attack but rather the last event of War Games. Colonel Aetos gives orders to each wingleader. Xaden is ordered to select riders to be stationed with him outside the borders of Navarre’s wards at Athebyne, where they will remain for five days.[43] Everyone quickly packs and prepares for the long flight. Liam is unusually tense. Violet sees Andarna and grows concerned about her ability to keep up and hide during the fights to come. Then she sees a harness she is wearing that can hook to Tairn's saddle, allowing him to carry her easily. Xaden approaches and claims Liam, Imogen and Violet for his team despite Dain’s resistance. Dain and Xaden argue and Violet intervenes, which makes Dain realize that something is going on between the two of them. He begs Violet not to go, saying "he's going to get you killed," but Violet insists that she trusts Xaden, and goes with him.[43] They fly to Athebyne and stop to take a break at a lake closest to the outpost so that the dragons can rest and have a drink. Xaden and Violet are behind a rock together, kissing, when they are surprised by a pair of gryphon riders. Violet immediately moves to attack them, but Xaden stops her, and she is horrified when he says to them, "you're fucking early," revealing that he knows them.[44] The gryphon riders (as Violet calls them, not knowing yet that they are called fliers) tell them, to Violet's confusion, that they have been patrolling nearby and that Venin recently decimated a nearby town. When they leave after delivering their warning, Violet realizes that she is the only one there who didn't know that Xaden has been aiding the enemy and also that she is the only one who doesn't have a rebellion mark. She accuses Xaden of being a traitor, but when he explains about the Venin and that they are actually real, Violet comes to understand that it might be true. However she is furious that he never told her the truth, and Xaden tells her that he couldn't - because if Dain used his signet on her he would know everything. Before flying to Athebyne, she tells him she believes him, but doesn't trust him any more.[45] When they get to Athebyne they find the Outpost deserted and a missive waiting for them. The letter says that it is a test of their command - which Xaden says is really a test of their loyalty; they must choose between leaving the outpost and pretending they have seen nothing, or defending Resson, the trading post just across the border. All of the riders, including Violet, vote to defend Resson—even if it means they might die.[46] “ "I've been defenseless, and now I'm a rider. Riders fight." ” –Violet Sorrengail to Xaden Riorson before the battle at Resson, Fourth Wing During the Battle of Resson, Violet does her best to hit the venin with lightning. She tries to provide cover for the riders evacuating the townspeople on the ground, and does her best to focus on her own job rather than on worrying about Xaden. She sees Soleil Telery die, stepping into the dead zone of earth drained by the venin, and warns the others. She tells Xaden they need to lure the venin away from the city, and then continues to try striking them with lightning over and over again, but she doesn't have enough control. Liam and his dragon Deigh come to Violet and Tairn's aid when they are attacked by a Wyvern, which leads to Deigh's death - and therefore Liam's. There is nothing Violet can do to help him, and Xaden carries Liam over to his dragon so that they can die together. Heartbroken, Violet goes back into the battle, determined to be "as strategic as Brennan, as confident as Mira," and to show the assholes exactly how violent she can be.[47] A venin appears on the back of Tairn, and Violet unbuckles herself in order to fight it. She is stabbed in the side by the venin, but uses her power to blind it temporarily, and then kills it. She realizes that killing a venin also destroys any Wyvern that they might have created, and determinedly goes after the last venin, managing to aim true and strike it with lightning. Then she falls from Tairn's back, hearing Xaden scream her name as she does.[48] Andarna catches her mid-fall, stopping time for long enough for the others to pull Violet to safety from her back. Violet fades in and out of consciousness as waves of pain like fire consume her. Xaden snaps to someone that her blood is "fucking black," and Imogen cries that it has to be poison. The cadets argue over her about where to take her, but soon agree that they will save her. Violet isn't sure how much time passes, but is flown somewhere, Xaden holding her all the while and telling her that she needs to fight.[49] Violet wakes up three days later to Xaden waiting for her by her bedside. At first she doesn't seem to remember what happened, allowing Xaden to check her wounds, and looking at him in confusion when he promises to make it all up to her. Then her eyes widen, and she asks him where they are - saying "don't you dare lie to me. Not again." She recognizes Aretia from the temple outside the window, and Xaden thinks to himself that she is brilliant.[50] After a shower, Xaden returns to his room where she is waiting and begs her for forgiveness. Before they can really talk about anything, there's a knock on the door - and they are interrupted by Brennan. Violet stares at her older brother in shock as he welcomes her to the Revolution. Physcial Description : Violet is self-described as too small and too fragile. Her exact height and weight are not given, but she is shorter than 5'4" based on Xaden's comments (she’s assumed to be 5’2" or 5’3"). At the start of the series she weighs no more than 115 pounds. Due to a connective tissue disorder, she bruises, dislocates joints, and breaks bones easily. According to Mira, Violet had already broken her arm prior to the events of Fourth Wing and sprains some joint every other week.[53] She uses cloth wraps with metal clasps given to her by Major Gilstead to wrap her joints and prevent them from dislocating or being further injured. [4] Prior to any sparring match, Violet makes sure to wrap her joints to prevent them from dislocating or tearing. She has a beautiful, ethereal face and fair skin. [54] She is mentioned by her mother to have "pale skin, pale eyes and pale hair" due to a sickness her mother caught during pregnancy. According to Violet she has two shades; pale and burned.[4] Her hair is brown and starts to slowly fade around her shoulders to a steely, metallic silver by the ends. The natural pigment seems to gradually abandon it no matter the length so cutting it short wouldn't remove the metallic ends. To stay agile in sparring and in battle, she keeps her hair braided in a crown around her head so it can't be grabbed easily. Violet's eyes are a light hazel of varying blues and ambers. She wears size 7 boots, and carries a sheathed dagger in her right boot as well as three other daggers sheathed on her ribs across Parapet. [4] She has a dragon relic on her back of a black dragon mid-flight that stretches from shoulder to shoulder with a silhouette of a golden, shimmering dragon in the center.[55] Outfits : Conscription Day : She swaps a cream colored tunic and belt for a tight fitted black shirt that covers her arms and breezy pants for leather ones, with sheaths on her thighs, that hug every curve. Dragonscale Corset : Mira gifts her a vest-styled corset to wear over the shirt that covers her from collarbone to just below her waist wrapping around her breasts and crossing up and over her shoulders. The vest was specially crafted using Teine's scales which were shrunken so that they could be sewn in to protect her. Hidden sheaths are sewn diagonally along the ribcage of the vest. [53] Violet notes that the vest shimmers slightly as she moves due to the scales catching the light under a camouflaging mesh that covers them. [56] Flight Gear : All riders, when attending flight lessons, or are in the air, are provided with flight jackets that bear no name-tag besides the rank. There are also flight goggles to prevent eyes stinging and watering in the air from the wind. Summer Uniform : Light weight black top with slits down the front that give her direct access to the daggers sheathed along her ribs in the dragonscale corset. Personality : Violet is extremely smart, confident, selfless, and stubborn. She cares deeply for her friends and older siblings, and she'll easily stand up for herself and those who need it. Despite Xaden's nickname for her, "Violence," she's actually very opposed to killing, often showing mercy for her opponents despite the possibility of them retaliating and trying to kill her in the future. Violet also shows extreme emotional intelligence when it comes to her romantic relationships, refusing to settle for hiding her feelings. Her inner strength and courage made Tairneanach choose her. Violet loves nights when storms beat against the window of her room, both illuminating and throwing shadows over the book she's usually curled up reading. [58] Violet notes that prior to the events of Fourth Wing she only had two relationships. [53] Mentally, Violet is capable of building a mental wall around the pain and then telling herself the pain only exists in that box inside her mind when she suffers an injury. 2.Xaden Riorson : Xaden Riorson is the Duke of Tyrrendor and a lieutenant rider (former third-year rider and wingleader of the Fourth Wing). He is bonded to the dragon Sgaeyl. Early Life : Born in March, 611 AU, to the heir of Tyrrendor Fen Riorson, and Talia Riorson. Xaden grew up in Riorson House located above Aretia, the capital of Tyrrendor. His mother left them when he was ten, having fulfilled the requirements of her marriage contract with his father. His family carries the royal lineage of ruling the province of Tyrrendor, thus technically making Xaden the heir to the Tyrrish throne if the province had seceded from Navarre during the Tyrrish Rebellion. To further strengthen this royal claim prior to the beginning of the rebellion, Fen Riorson secured an alliance with Viscount Tecarus, by using Xaden's royalty in a betrothal contract to Catriona Cordella, third in line for the Poromish throne. On July 1, 627 AU, 16 year old Xaden was forced to witness the "Calldyr Executions" of the rebellion's leadership alongside the other 107 separatist children by General Melgren's dragon Codagh. When Codagh's dragonfire burned the 107 children's parents, his fire activated the rune-stones each child held in their hand. These complex rune-tempered stones, created by Colonel Mairi, were meant to protect the children in the event that the Rebellion failed and their parents were killed. With their activation during the executions, the runes created rebellion relics along whichever arm the child was using to hold the stone in addition to protecting the children from General Melgren's signet. Xaden, as the oldest of the separatist children, later struck a deal with General Lilith Sorrengail in which he took personal responsibility for the 107 children and in doing so received 107 scars across his back, an archaic Tyrrish custom. In return, he and the children would be allowed to fight for their lives in the Riders Quadrant instead of being executed. In the aftermath of the Rebellion, Xaden was sent to Tirvainne, along with Liam Mairi, to be fostered by Duke Lindell. While being fostered, Xaden taught Liam how to fight in order to prepare them for Basgiath. In July 631 AU, after his twentieth birthday, Xaden was conscripted and entered the Riders Quadrant alongside his best friend Garrick Tavis. The two began to meet in secret along with other unnamed "marked ones" to ensure their survival within the quadrant. During their Threshing Xaden defended his best friend from King Tauri's second son Alic, inevitably killing Alic. During this Threshing, Xaden bonded with Sgaeyl. It was after Threshing that Xaden and Garrick decided to begin smuggling weaponry out of Basgiath in an effort to protect fliers they had partnered with against venin. They also began working to rebuild Aretia and Riorson House. Fourth Wing : Xaden is present as Wingleader of Fourth Wing when Violet Sorrengail arrives to cross the Parapet. When assignments are being given out, Xaden uses his position to move her squad, Second Squad, Flame Section, to his Wing. This places her under his chain of command. A few weeks into the year, Xaden brings a group of first-year "marked ones" out to the woods near the river, to check in with them. He assigns Imogen Cardulo and Garrick Tavis to train the first-years before waving them off, and then speaks to Violet, who had been hiding in a tree above them during their meeting. They agree that he will owe her if she keeps their secret. A few weeks later in the sparring gym, Xaden forces Violet to spar against him using the opportunity to test her fighting abilities while ensuring that she still kept their meeting secret. He gradually disarms her and also offers her insights into how best to use her small stature as an advantage. He also tells her that she can't continue to rely on poisoning her opponents and that she needs to get stronger instead. Xaden gives Violet advice about how to pass the chimney obstacle on the Gauntlet. Then he helps her again during Threshing, when Violet rushes to defend a gold feathertail, her future dragon, Andarna. As per the Codex, Xaden was barred from interfering, but he found a loophole by having his dragon Sgaeyl call her mate Tairn to come help Violet defend Andarna. When Tairn bonds with Violet, it ties Violet's life to Xaden's through their dragon’s bond. When Xaden discovers Violet has trouble staying on her dragon, he crafts a rider's saddle for Tairn so Violet would be safe flying and fighting seated (and tied) to Tairn's back.[1] At the end of the year, for the final War Games, Xaden chooses Violet to join his riot which was made up exclusively of marked ones. Dain Aetos's father, Colonel Aetos, assigns Xaden’s riot to Athebyne which is outside of the wards. Upon arriving at Athebyne, they discover the outpost has been abandoned. There are new orders saying that the group can either stay and help protect Resson from venin and wyvern, or they can relocate to another outpost. The group decides to fight in the Battle of Resson and Liam and Soleil die in the battle. Violet gets poisoned and Xaden brings her to Aretia in a panic. It’s there that it's revealed that her brother Brennan is still alive as he mends her and Violet recovers in a coma for three days. Physcial Description : Xaden is muscular and tall, with a massive chest, wide shoulders and heavily muscled arms.[2] He has windblown black hair and dark brows. He has warm-toned, tawny-brown skin with dark stubble along his jawline and eyes resembling gold-flecked onyx. When Violet first meets him she describes him as, "more than four inches over six foot tall."[3] His features are harsh and utterly perfect, as if an artist spent their lifetime carving and sculpting them, with a year alone spent on his mouth. Xaden inherited his high cheekbones, long lashes, ear shape, and the golden hue of his eyes from his mother. However, in appearance, he mostly takes after his father, Fen Riorson.[4] Relics and Scars A diagonal scar bisects his left eyebrow and ends at the top corner of his cheek. He received this scar from Sgaeyl during his Threshing. A dark shimmering rebellion relic curved in swirls and dips starts at his left wrist, winding up his neck. His back is covered in a dragon relic of Sgaeyl, that sweeps from his waist over both of his shoulders, as well as 107 silver scars on top of the dragon relic, which came from claiming responsibility for the 107 separatist children. He gains another scar over his heart when he takes responsibility for Violet, between the events of Fourth Wing and the start of Iron Flame. Outfits : He is always seen in black leather clothes, especially his flight jacket, as is uniform for a Rider. None of his uniforms have patches aside from his year, wing, or rank. [5] His summer uniform is a short-sleeved top under his usual flight jacket. [6] He smells of mint and leather, and something that borders between citrus and floral. [7] Personality : Riders seem to move around him, giving him wide berth as though he's a shark. He walks with lethal grace.[8] Xaden is authoritative and concise, making quick judgement calls with the help of his signets. Due to his upbringing he is emotionally distant with most people, with very few exceptions.
