The atmosphere had shifted between him and Tess over the last few weeks, tension hanging thick in the air like the humidity of the approaching storm. They were either on the brink of something new or the edge of destruction, and Joel couldn't tell which way the tide was turning. The knock at the door pulled him from his spiral of thoughts. He rose, pushing through the uncertainty that had become his constant companion, and opened the door to find a girl standing on the other side, a quirky sparkle in her eye that starkly contrasted with the bleak backdrop of their world. She introduced herself as a neighbor — just moved in next door, she said, with an undeniable charm to her demeanor.
