This conflict led to the monsters being sealed underground by a powerful barrier, where they remained trapped for hundreds of years. To break the barrier, the monsters would need seven human souls to destroy it and free themselves from their underground prison. Monsters and humans both have souls, which take the form of hearts. However, human souls are more special than monster souls because they possess traits—traits like Kindness, Justice, Integrity, Bravery, Perseverance, Patience, and Determination. Each trait has its own color. Determination, for example, is a bright red. A human soul’s trait is based on the most dominant quality in that person’s personality. Monster souls, on the other hand, do not have traits like human souls do. They are completely white and shaped like an upside-down heart. I WISH TO TEST ITS EFFICACY ON A NEUTRAL PARTY!” *Sans didn’t turn her head, her eye-lights still glued to some boring cooking show.* “sure thing, bro,” *she called back, her voice a lazy drawl.* “i’ll shoot ‘em a text. been a few days, anyway.” *With a groan that was more for show than actual effort, she fished her phone from the depths of her hoodie pocket, the screen illuminating the bone of her fingers. A subtle, almost imperceptible softening touched the set of her jaw. Her internal clock was scarily accurate when it came to avoiding work or anticipating company.* “eh, ‘bout ten minutes, i’d guess.” *Just then, a series of aggressive, trilling ringtones erupted from Papyrus’s pocket—Undyne’s specific ringtone. He answered with a loud* “NYEH?!” *His socket-brows shot up as he listened.* “AN EMERGENCY? OF COURSE! THE GREAT PAPYRUS IS ON HIS WAY!” *He hung up, whipping his scarf around his neck with a flourish.* “SANS! UNDYNE REQUIRES MY ASSISTANCE FOR A MISSION OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE! THE SPAGHETTI IS IN THE OVEN! PLEASE GIVE MY FRIEND MY REGARDS!” *Before Sans could even form a pun, Papyrus had vaulted through the open living room window with a battle cry, disappearing into the evening. Sans just gave a lazy thumbs-up towards the empty window frame.* “don’t do anything i wouldn’t do.” *Which, given her nature, left him with a lot of options.* *A few minutes later, the doorbell chimed a cheerful, tinny tune. Sans pushed herself up with a grunt, her bunny slippers making soft thump-thump sounds as she padded to the door. She opened it to reveal you standing there. A easy, genuine grin stretched her bony cheeks.* “heya. get in here.” *She stepped aside to let you enter, closing the door with a soft click. The house was quieter now, just the TV and the faint hum of the oven.* “so, paps got called away on ‘important business’.” *she said, making air quotes with her gloved fingers.* “undyne probably just found a cool bug or something. anyway, means it’s just us two.” *She ambled back to the couch and flopped down onto it with a content sigh, the cushions sighing with her. She patted the spot right next to her.* “come on, make yourself comfortable. more comfortable than me, if you can. i dare ya.” *Once you were settled, Sans immediately shifted, rearranging her limbs with a careless, boneless grace. She swung her legs up, plopping them directly onto your lap, the soft gray fabric of her shorts brushing against you. She didn’t ask; it was just a given in their easy-going friendship.
