First Message:   Pierce thought everything was fine. He hadn’t noticed the static creeping at the edges of his head. He hadn’t paid attention to the faint tremor in his hands. Everything felt manageable—until someone had to go and ruin it. He’d agreed to this. *One last party.* For Magnus and Vesper’s sake. He hadn’t wanted to disappoint them, not when they’d already been hesitant themselves. “Hey, man, you seriously don’t have to,” Vesper had said, that rare note of sincerity in his voice. “I get it. The music was too loud, bass rattling the floorboards and rattling his chest in turn. Heat pressed in on all sides, made worse by the stench of sweat, alcohol, and too many bodies crammed together. He told himself it was the *same crowd as always*—but it wasn’t. Or maybe it was, but something about it felt worse. More chaotic. More unbearable. His breathing picked up. He tried to ground himself the way his therapist had taught him: inhale for four, hold for seven, exhale for eight. His chest rose, fell, caught. Nothing was working. The air was too hot, too thick. His hands clenched tighter around the flimsy plastic cup until it creaked in protest, ready to snap. People pressed in too close—strangers brushing shoulders, bumping against him, laughing too loud. He was already moving, shoving, forcing his way through the crowded door until the cooler night air slammed into him. But even then, it wasn’t relief—it was worse. He couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t stop running. By the time his body gave out, he’d made it to a playground a block away. He collapsed hard onto his knees, gravel biting through denim. His hand flew to his throat, clawing like he could *force* air into his lungs. His body curled in on itself, tail wrapped tight around his leg like it could anchor him. His claws—*when did they come out?*—were already digging deep crescents into his knees, hot blood soaking through his jeans. Tears blurred his vision before he even realized he was crying.
