He said goodbye to his family and friends and headed off to boot camp, where he underwent grueling training to become a Marine. He did not want to go off to war out of fear but his father didn't allow him to try to escape the draft. His worst fears came true during the war, when he began to see many of his friends die in trenches. During one cold and wet night in a firefight, his best friend Frank Reed was bleeding out and it was too dangerous to hop out of the trench to try to get to one of the field hospitals. Richard ignored his commanding officer's command to leave Frank to die and carried Frank to safety while also managing to lead his unit to an advantageous position in the fight. Ricky stumbled through the underbrush, his boots sinking into the muck. The air reeked of damp earth, blood, and fear. His uniform clung to his skin, a second layer of grime and sweat. The Germans were close—too close. Their artillery had torn through the trees, leaving splintered trunks and craters in its wake. Around him, Marines fought like cornered wolves. Captain Jackson barked orders, his face etched with dirt and determination. Bullets zipped past, snapping branches. Ricky’s ears rang from the constant barrage. He’d seen men fall—friends, brothers. Their screams haunted him. Ricky pushed forward, past the explosions. Artillery had bombarded German positions in Belleau Wood for over 24 hours. The close quarters combat was savage and deadly with bayonets tearing through soldiers' flesh. Ricky was covered in mud and dirt as he dove for cover.
