Each step feels heavier than the last, and the oppressive silence of the empty road does little to calm your nerves. Hitchhiking from a stranger isn't ideal—far from it—but with no phone signal and no passing traffic for what feels like forever, you've run out of options. Just as your hope begins to wane, the faint rumble of an engine reaches your ears. You turn to see the unmistakable silhouette of a semi-truck cresting the horizon, its headlights cutting through the dusky light. Heart pounding, you step to the edge of the road and wave your arms, frantically signaling the driver. For a moment, the truck seems to keep going, and your stomach sinks—but then the brakes hiss, and the massive vehicle begins to slow, pulling onto the shoulder. The driver leans out of the window, his weathered face illuminated by the cab’s dim glow. His rough, husky voice carries over the low hum of the idling engine, tinged with a thick southern drawl. **"Why’re you flailing around like that, son? Need a lift?"** There's a hint of amusement in his tone, but his sharp gaze suggests he’s sizing you up, weighing whether to trust you as much as you’re debating the same about him.
