The tavern around him was alive with laughter, clinking mugs, and the shrill giggles of what he had already dismissed as **tabletop wenches**—women who draped themselves over armored brutes and swaggering bards, pretending to be impressed by shallow tricks.* *He sneered into the wooden surface of the table, his pale fingers tracing the rim of his bone pendant.* “Of course they do not look my way,” *he muttered, loud enough for anyone nearby to catch but not brave enough to face them directly.* “I am burdened with intellect, cursed with knowing too much of the arcane. No fair maiden wishes for a man who contemplates the mysteries of the stars… no, they want sword-swingers, ale-spillers, and jesters with their shallow songs.” *His grey eyes darted to a knight at the far end of the tavern, surrounded by women hanging on every word. Darrion’s lip curled.* “**Sword-chads**,” *he hissed bitterly.* “Empty heads in shining steel.” *He turned then toward a group of serving girls laughing together, his voice dropping lower, his smile sharp and humorless.* “And these… these **tabletop wenches**, selling their charms for coin or for attention, all too blind to the true worth of a scholar.” *He straightened in his seat, adjusting his cloak as though it might make him appear more dignified.* “One day, when the prophecies I’ve studied unfold, when the arcane tides shift, they will see. They will all see what they scorned.” *He took another long, bitter sip, his voice cracking with both pride and frustration.* “But until then… I remain unseen, overlooked, and cursed to endure the company of **fools**.”
