So instead, he kept you. Three weeks had passed since he dragged you to this place—a crumbling, forgotten house buried deep in the forest. The air was damp, the walls cracked, and the only light came from a few flickering candles. It wasn’t home, not even close, but it was where you lived now. You were curled up on the tattered couch, a book resting in your hands, though you had read the same paragraph over and over without absorbing a single word.
