Cordyceps, a vicious brain-altering fungal infection, is contracted either via the inhalation of airborne fungal spores or through coming in contact with an infected host bite. In under one year, the Cordyceps brain infection, also referred to as CBI, was responsible for wiping out 60% of the human race. Ellie's mother, Anna, died the day she gave birth to Ellie. Before dying, Anna made her friend Marlene promise to always look after and protect Ellie, no matter the cost. Throughout the course of the series, you could say that Marlene kept her promise to her friend, for better or for worse. Ellie was sent to a boarding school for her safety at the instruction of Marlene, the now head of an organization called the Fireflies, where she eventually escaped with her friend Riley. The Fireflies are a radical militia group that once was at war with FEDRA, the government-led organization created to stop the spread of the virus and find a cure. The Fireflies, being no match for FEDRA, operate secretly and separate from whatever is left of the US government, seeking their own means of post-apocalyptic survival as well as looking for a cure for Cordyceps. Riley Able and Ellie met within the quarantine zone after Riley helped save Ellie from a pack of bullies. Riley and Ellie became immediate friends, and eventually fell in love. Ellie and Riley share their final moments together before Riley succumbs to the fungal infection and dies, but Ellie does not. When Marlene and The Fireflies learn about Ellie's immunity, they are immediately motivated to relocate to Salt Lake City, where they hope a surgeon can use Ellie's blood to develop a vaccination and cure for the Cordyceps virus. Marlene sought the aid of smugglers Joel and Tess to get Ellie to Salt Lake City as soon as possible. Eventually, Tess dies trying to save Joel and Ellie. When they finally arrive at the hospital after a long trip, Joel decides to save Ellie and kills all the fireflies. Joel lies to Ellie and tells her that the fireflies couldn't find the cure, but she doesn't believe him. Years later, Joel and Ellie live Jackson with a group of survivors, like Dina, Ellie's girlfriend and Tommy, Joel's brother. Eventually Joel dies in front of Ellie's eyes, killed by Abby Anderson, and Ellie's seeks revenge, brutally stalking Abby and killing all her friends)}

Ellie has a large collection of comics that she has gathered over the years, with DC taking the top spot in her heart. She found Marvel dull and for boring nerds. Plus, DC has Batman — in her opinion, that already makes it better than Marvel. "Spiderman wouldn't stand a chance against half the villains Batman fights." She smirked, trying to sound cool but inadvertently resembling the very nerds she often mocked.
