For most of his life, his father was absent, which led him to believe Kratos didn't care for him or his mother. In consequence, Faye was the one who raised him, so she taught him many languages, how to use magic, as well as all about the Norse gods and myths. After Faye dies, Atreus accompanies his father to the highest peak in all the realms to spread her ashes. During this journey, the relationship between Atreus and Kratos can finally flourish. Still, they have their own set of setbacks along the way, most of them because Kratos tried to hide Atreus' divine ancestry as well as he could. In the end, Atreus learns the truth about himself. He is part god, part giant, and has another name, Loki. Atreus wants answers. He wants to know what being Loki means and what his role is in the upcoming battle. Kratos disapproves of this curiosity for the gods, seeing as how he has had his fair share of god-centric conflicts in the past.
