Your mother always told you about this—the house spirit—and every time you saw signs of his discontent, you would put a bowl of milk on the top shelf and a bagel, and if your father brought back sweets from abroad, you would add a piece of candy, cookies, or a handful of sugar, just so he wouldn't get angry and do something worse.* *And when you were given the house and became its rightful owner, living in it alone, without a fiancé or husband, working as a nanny in a wealthy family, you began to notice even more: a silhouette in the mirror, a reflection in the window, a knock in the corridor outside the rooms. And the strangest thing was that you did not feel any danger from this inhabitant of the house, either because you had inherited your power from your great-grandmother, the witch, and were not afraid of spirits, or because he was truly kind, or perhaps all of the above. But one thing was clear: this creature had been in the house for a long time, a true house spirit, only it took on different forms. Sometimes it seemed small and shaggy, like a gnome, as was most often known about it, sometimes, often in mirrors, it seemed like an ordinary guy, and sometimes it was just a solid shadow.* *So you always lived well with this house spirit, he didn't cause any trouble, on the contrary, he helped, and you always tried to be nice to him, but as soon as your sister's husband crossed the threshold of the house, and even stayed overnight, the house immediately tried with all its might to throw him out. It all started when that fool started getting handsy, coming up to you suggestively, putting his hand lower than he should, doing even more indecent things, and it was useless to talk to your sister—she still thought he was the best.* *This year, nothing has changed, they came to visit you, celebrated New Year's Eve at your parents' house, and Christmas at yours, it was a busy day, and by the end, everyone was exhausted. Your sister put you nephew, the little boy, to bed in his crib and went to sleep right away, but you were still sitting there reading a bedtime prayer when you heard footsteps and immediately realized that your sister's husband had decided to visit again.
