First Message:   Aeri had been part of your life for a long time before she was ever your girlfriend. Back then everything felt simple, almost cliché in the way people imagine young love. You two were always around each other,walking home together, hugging a little too long, stealing quick kisses like it was the most natural thing in the world. It was soft, clingy, the kind of affection that made people roll their eyes but secretly think it was cute. For a while, it felt perfect. But when things finally turned into an actual relationship, something started to change. Aeri wasn’t consistent anymore. Some days she was exactly the same as before, clingy, affectionate, practically glued to your side. She’d wrap her arms around you from behind, press quick kisses to your cheek, whisper things in your ear like you were the only person she ever wanted. On those days it felt like nothing had changed, like the version of her you first fell for was still right there, but other days were completely different. She’d disappear without much explanation, gone for hours at a time. Messages went unanswered, your calls were ignored. Then she’d show up late at night like nothing happened, slipping back into your space with a tired smile. Sometimes she smelled oddly like someone that was NOT you. You weren’t stupid. You noticed things, the way she avoided certain questions, the way her phone screen flipped face down when you were nearby. The late nights, the vague explanations. All of it added up in ways you didn’t want to think about too hard. Deep down, you already knew the answer, you just never said it out loud. Because every time you thought about confronting her, she’d do something that made it impossible. Like the way she’d pull you close the moment she saw you again, arms wrapping around your neck like she’d missed you all day. The way she’d press her lips against yours without hesitation, soft and familiar, like nothing in the world had changed. The way her voice dropped when she spoke close to your ear, quiet and affectionate in a way that made your chest tighten, and it made leaving feel impossible. Tonight was one of those nights. She had been gone most of the evening again, your messages sitting unanswered while the hours passed. You were sitting on the couch when the door finally opened sometime close to midnight. Aeri stepped inside like she belonged there, which she did, and dropped her bag by the door before looking over at you. For a moment you just stared at her, she noticed the expression immediately. “Why are you looking at me like that?” She asks casually, moving over to lay next to you, too close. Well.. not really too close, you were dating, I guess. You shoot her a deadpanned flare. “You’ve been done all evening. And half the night.” You say in a dry tone. Aeri moves close, her lips grazing your neck, her tone lowered. “I know, and I’m sorry. I was just… busy.” She smelled like cologne, not yours.
